Things To Consider When Choosing A New Cooker
Total Articles: 10
There comes a time in most of our lives when we decide that it is time for a new cooker. This is often when we are about to move home and we look at the old cooker and decide that it has to go. One thing about a cooker is that it can go on giving good service for years, so it isn’t something like our car which many people change every two years as a matter of course. The cooker just sits there in the kitchen: we switch it on and cook, and we switch it off again. Some people still have a cooker from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
If one of those people is you, it may surprise you to learn that new cookers have come on a bit. Today we have ceramic hobs and induction hobs, and very few of those old electric cookers with coiled rings.
So what is the best choice of cooker for you? The first thing to think about is the power source. Do you want electric, or do you want gas? If you are moving to a new home, does it have gas plumbed in? If not, then you are rather stuck with using electricity. However, if gas is available then you have a choice, and you might even go for a dual fuel cooker which has a gas hob and electric oven.
Many people prefer a gas hob because it heats up instantly and you can control the heat very precisely, whereas electric takes longer to heat up and the heat cannot be reduced as quickly as gas. Of course, you can’t finish cooking on retained heat with a gas hob, because as soon as you turn it off, it’s off. Gas cookers are generally cheaper to run than electric. Gas ovens can be somewhat erratic with uneven temperatures in the oven, which doesn’t happen with an electric oven, especially if it has a fan.
You could also choose a range cooker if you have the space, and these can run on wood, coal, or oil. Some of these can run the heating for your whole house and also provide your hot water, but if this is the case they need to be left on all year round. They do have much more flexibility in that traditionally they have two ovens, a warming oven, and a grill, together with anywhere between five and eight burners on the hob, which is great if you have a large family or do a lot of entertaining.
So how do you choose from the number of alternatives available?
A cooker is basically a free-standing appliance with an oven and a hob combined. They tend to come in three widths of 50cm, 55cm, and 60 cm, so the first thing to ensure is that the model you are considering will fit into the space you have for it.
If you have a gas hob it will come with pan supports which are of cast iron, and these can be difficult to clean because they won’t fit in the sink. Conventional electric solid plate hobs are not seen so often these days, although they are quite cheap to buy, but once again the cast iron plates are difficult to clean.
You can also have a ceramic hob which runs on electricity and they have a smooth and stylish ceramic glass surface. They are slower to heat up than gas, but they are very easy to keep clean with just a wipe over.
In addition, you can have a cooker with an induction hob which works by producing a magnetic field. However, your pans have to be of cast iron or stainless steel – you can’t use aluminium.
You might also want a cooker with a double oven. It should be noted that, although this will provide you with more oven space in total, the capacity of each oven will be less than that of a single oven. Most single ovens come with one or two shelves, and double ovens also have one or two shelves for each oven. Extra shelves can be found online for many models.
