Important Social & Emotional Development Milestones For Preschoolers
At the preschool age, social and emotional development milestones are very important. This development includes the ability to learn how to interact with peers and adults and the ability to control emotions. Although babies develop bonding with people who appear frequently around them, developing social skills – learning to interact, communicate, and share with others – can take a few years. In addition, learning to control emotions and the response to these emotions is also long. Quite often, it takes a child many years to learn and develop strong social-emotional skills, sometimes even into their young adulthood.

Between 3-4 years of Age
By this age, your child should be able to share her/his toys and join playgroups with other children. S/he should also be able to initiate and make up games to entertain herself/himself. Additionally, at this age, children learn to follow simple instructions and rules but would want to win nonetheless. Preschoolers also tend to dramatize their play, imitating actions, pretending, and acting scenes. They are more likely to pursue independence, become a little defiant, and sometimes even bossy. But this is not a cause for concern. They compensate for their bossiness by being cooperative with parents, becoming more even-tempered, and by showing attachment with a particular friend. This is also the age when children experience multiple emotions including excitement, happiness, fear, jealousy, and anger. They also tend to show less egocentric behaviour.
Typically the causes of concern can include rigidness (specifically about routines), over-attachment with one/both parents, and an inability to share with others. In the absence of this developmental milestone, the child can also be overly dependent on her/his caregivers, can get upset if routines are changed, and can be either too fearful or too passive. Between 4-5 years of Age
At this crucial juncture, your child should get better at being in small groups, sharing her/his toys and other possessions, and should be able to play imagined or real games with their friends. Quite often, children of this age group develop good friendships and would like to spend time with them. This is more common if your child already attends a kids play school in Dwarka. They can also listen to others while they are talking, which helps in becoming aware of others feel. Children, as young as four years, can also show awareness in judging what is right and can have a strong sense of moral reasoning. They can also point out correctly what is good behaviour and what is bad. In addition, your child should be able to stick to a task (even if difficult) for a while and manage her/his emotions better while at it.
The common red flags at the end of five years include continued dependence on caregivers and difficulty in separation from one/both parents. The child can also demonstrate a fear that could restrict her/his daily activities; this could also include lack of interest and participation in what other kids are doing around them. Likewise, the child’s inability to share and taking turns while playing with other children require professional attention. Extreme rigidity toward routines and lack of interest in games and playing can also be a big red flag.
