This is because of the dominating politics of his time; Jacotot had to teach students speaking a language he was not familiar. He instructed students to read bilingual edition of books by using an interpreter. His students learned to read, think, and write in the French language. *There are similar pedagogical points stated by Gamsci and Ranciere in their texts Selections from the Prison Notebooks and the Ignorant Schoolmaster respectively, as will be shown in this essay.
This resulted into good outcomes, and Jacotot came to realize three principles about teaching and learning.
He saw that all men share the same intellectual capacity, everything is everything, and man has been given the ability from god to instruct himself. With these principles, Jacotot was a position to refute the views of Old masters mainly on the explication idea.
Jacotot questioned what the purpose of explication was, and he argued that the universal teaching and form of education that emancipates a person cannot be within the set of the status quo or systematized. Therefore, using universal teaching of different orders of the society was not appropriate. The main concern for Ranciere in the description of the intellectual adventures of Jacotot is that there is a great temptation towards homeschooling (Ranciere, 17).
There is a connection between the present times and Jacotot times, which arises when talking about personal responsibility. Governmental bodies today justify the social programs disintegration that arises at the personal responsibility stakes when it comes to parenting. This is a similar point to what Gamsci states about a capitalist society. For Gamsci, “in acquiring one’s conception of the world one always belongs to a particular groupie who is that of all social elements which share the same mode of thinking and acting (Gramsci, 60)”. This means that knowledge or education is the deciding factor for maintaining and creating homogeneity which is a form of educative pressure on an individual to obtain collaboration and consent.
