Is It Safe To Implant A Tooth?
Dental implants are one of the best kinds of tooth replacement available today. Deemed to be safe with a very high success rate, dental surgeons are recommending implants more than any other form of tooth replacement, such as dentures or bridges. Because of this, a growing number of patients are opting for this procedure to fix gaps in their teeth. But are dental implants really safe as they claim it to be? Read on and find out.
Dental Implants: The Process
The procedure starts with the administration of local anesthetic.
Holes are then drilled into the jawline before the implants are inserted. The implants act as anchors or fasteners for the new teeth to lock them in. After the procedure, the surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help with the pain that may follow. Some minor discomfort and facial swelling is expected a few weeks after the surgery, and may find it hard to eat hard foods.
Dental Implants: Safety Risks
Just like any kind of surgery, some small risks are involved. The most dangerous are infections, but they are very unlikely to happen because of any mistakes during surgery. Another risk is the procedure being unsuccessful that will require re-operation or cause problems in the future. For this particular procedure, though, the success rate is remarkably high, so patients undergoing this procedure should not have much to worry about.
Problems can occur during the healing process. Some patients will eat the wrong kinds of food following the surgery, causing their implants to move or become damaged. This can lead to infection, pain and additional procedures. The risks decrease overtime, though, as the mouth starts to entirely heal. But even after months of having the implants, problems can still occur, particularly when the patient fails to perform proper oral hygiene.
Dental Implants: Preventing Complications
For as long as you take care of your dental implants, there is very little chance that anything will go wrong. Simply follow the instructions of your surgeon and they should last long without any complications. There is some risk that dental implants will worsen certain pre-existing medical conditions. If you have any cavities in the areas around the implant, these cavities can worsen with the installation of implants.
