There was a time, not very long ago, when top schools in Rohini encouraged children to spend their time in play. Children would build with blocks, draw from their imaginary worlds, and use their bodies to learn interaction with their classmates and with the world.
Increasingly these activities have assumed less importance whereas traditional instruction-led teaching has made its way in. More schools consider formal education important and the earlier they start, the better chances of learning among young children.
They believe the risk of lagging behind in important subjects such as math, language, and comprehension cannot be taken. The education system in the country agrees with it as do the parents.
However, education researchers, scientists, and educators have raised concerns over this didactic approach and wonder whether it really contributes to achievement in the future. Some claim that traditional instructional teaching could potentially slow down cognitive and emotional development among children, causing them stress and a dislike toward learning. It is to be understood that there exists a profound misunderstanding about how children learn. Professor emeritus Nancy Carlsson-Paige of University of Cambridge, Mass., says that more often children are expected to follow instructions, copying letters without even understanding what they are doing. The question remains, what kind of skills are we looking for in citizens of the 21st century?
India, being a labour-intensive economy needs a change in the skills-set wherein there is celebration of innovation and design. We need a workforce in the future that can adeptly rise to the challenges. With increasing importance given to testing, standardization of education, and didactic teaching methodologies, problems have come up. India lags behind many nations in educational achievement. Millions of children in India come from poor economic backgrounds and in this scenario experts claim that beginning their formal education early could bridge this gap. But does this move really help in necessary education?
Schools in Finland, a country known for its excellent education system, begin compulsory education by the 7th year. And, students here rank higher in reading, science, and math. Although Finland is a small country and has less diversity than India, the question remains whether the same system can work in India. Parents, who can afford children as young as three years are sent to institutions such as pre nursery schools and other areas in Delhi. This prevents children from spending their time in front of TV and rather be in a company of their peers and learn.
Research often indicates that the time spent in learning through play proves more beneficial as a child grows up. In fact, one research says that didactic education in the early years of a child can result in poor academic performance later. Perhaps this is one reason why you should be looking for a kids play school in Rohini. Formalized learning curtails a child’s ability to learn best by her/his own experimental ways. In addition, children develop perseverance, to express their emotions, and controlling their attention by playing just as well. Child development neuroscience also helps explain that young children learn better when they are exposed to active exploration instead of explanation and instruction.
Reading among young children cannot be rushed. Reading is a complex skill and cannot be developed naturally such as walking. However, it can be encouraged and fostered. Pre nursery schools in Rohini are doing just that. They are trying to ensure that children from all economic backgrounds can learn through play. It is only when we allow children to be their whole selves that they can learn their best. As parents, educators, and policy makers, we must focus on developing an education policy that encourages play as a form of learning, especially among young children.
Delhi International School Rohini Junior is the best play school in Rohini Sector 13 and aims to provide a holistic development of the students by enhancing their scholastic and co-scholastic development.
