A healthy set of teeth equals a beautiful smile. Sometimes, however, discolored areas of the tooth surface can prevent a smile from shining through. White blotches on your teeth can make you self-conscious to open your mouth.
There are several causes of the appearance of white spots on the teeth. Any disruption on tooth development can cause their development. Bacterial acids can lead to white spots as they start to dissolve tooth enamel that can eventually lead to decay. Below are other causes.
• Demineralization.
This happens when bacterial plaque accumulates on the tooth. It is mostly because of inadequate brushing and is a common problem among those wearing braces. These white areas are permanent and can lead to decay if not kept clean.
• Enamel hypoplasia. Resulting from nutritional deficiencies, prenatal smoking and premature births, areas of enamel hypoplasia are less mineralized and prone to decay. The enamel have spots from milky white to yellow to brownish, and have a linear appearance.
• Fluorosis. This happens when large amounts of fluoride and ingested while teeth are still forming, mostly a combination off sources like swallowing fluoride toothpaste, excessive fluoridated water and certain supplements. It appears chalky white, yellow or brown.
These are several approaches to get rid of white spots. The best procedure to do so will highly depend on how severe your condition is, and how much money you are willing to shell out to pay for it. Below are some options that you can discuss with your dentist.
• Bleaching. Tooth whitening with bleach can help balance the color of the tooth enamel. The safest results are in-office whitening treatments or a take-home kit supervised by a dentist. OTC bleaching products are available, but might take longer to show results.
• Microabrasion. This treatment involves the gentle removal of a layer of surface enamel, improving the appearance of the teeth. It is mostly combined with tooth whitening procedures for the best results.
• Porcelain veneers. The best option for discoloration patches not removed with bleaching, veneers are thin layers of ceramic material that are bonded on the front of the teeth. This results in natural-looking teeth that will resist future stains.
If you have white spots on your teeth or is concerned about you or your child getting them, do not be afraid to talk to your dentist about how you can get rid and prevent them. Getting rid of them might be easier and faster that you think.
