Art has an important role to play in early childhood development. Although much has been said about how art influences imagination, self-esteem, and creativity in a child, there are some critics who contend that core subjects are more important. It is very likely that this is the case because not much has been written about art fostering critical thinking, cognitive skills, and learning. In the present education system, there is more emphasis on didactic methodology and art is side lined as supplementary or for fun.
However, as a parent, if you are looking for a pre-nursery school in sector 18, make sure it is one, which focuses on art as a way of learning.
Research has shown that art encourages children to participate with their senses. In the process, it develops their social, cognitive, sensory-motor, and emotional skills. Not only is art a co-operative experience, it also gives challenges and pleasure to a child. More importantly, art allows educators and parents to discover the learning style of a child; in that it will ensure that the child is able to master various skills and developmental tasks. As children move from one developmental stage to another, art brings in the learning experiences that they can overcome at their own pace. Young children learn best when they use their bodies to explore learning such as using non-toxic clay, painting, and building. As they move up, they are more likely to engage with their senses and learn holistically.
Best schools in Dwarka sec 18 attempt to integrate art in their teaching methodology. After all, art is effective in teaching core subjects including science, math, and literacy. For instance, an art activity reinforcing the learning of a concept helps children retain information longer. Children, who are encouraged to draw pictures depicting a story, have been found to make progress in reading comprehension. In this way, art promotes language and literacy development. In addition, art introduces many pre-writing experiences, where children grasp and hold things, a skill that they will use later for holding pencils and pens. Art also develops a child’s reflective and expressive skills, which promote verbal creativity, spatial relation skills, print awareness, and visual literacy. In learning math, art reinforces numbers, classification, positive and negative spaces, pattern recognition, and sequencing. When children work with beads or collage materials, they can see structure, beauty, symmetry, and shapes that are essential to develop math skills later in life. Additionally, art is a great way to teach problem solving and pre-empting a pattern or sequence.
Although a nursery school in sector 18 is a good place to introduce art in your child’s life, parents play an equally important role. Art need not only be fostered in children through a curriculum, it can as easily be a family activity. Parents can facilitate learning by talking about their children’s art with them and expressing their observations. Not only does it build a healthy relationship between the child and the parent, it encourages the child to pursue art. Parents should keep in mind that art is not just about the final product, it is more importantly about the process. The process in art promotes learning and parents should focus on valuing a child’s art for this very aspect. Parents can also get involved and work with their child in creating art, which positively affects the child’s overall growth and attitude.
Children tend to love art quite naturally for its fun element but also because they can express themselves authentically. The freedom of thought, feeling, and choice gives them a safe space to express. Without art, it will be difficult to perceive a world where problem solving, individual responsibility, self-esteem, creativity thinking and sociability are so valuable and necessary.
