The Process Of Sheet Metal Fabrication By: Giles Wilson
Sheet metal fabrication refers to the different techniques of bending and shaping sheet metals. There are different types of equipment that are used for this purpose. Depending upon the nature of the project, you may have to use a wide range of devices that may vary from simple hand-made tools to highly sophisticated large automatic machinery. The first step is to prepare an engineering drawing. After that, the raw material will go through an array of processes. Following is a brief rundown on this.
Cutting
The preliminary operations include sheet metal works like slitting, perforating, cutting, and other such things. If the work involves heavier gauge materials, it will need heavy tools like power operated bench shears. On the other hand, simpler works can be done with simple cutting tools, such as hand scissor. There are different types of power driven shearing machines available, but the basic feature remains the same in all of them. For example, they all contain a movable blade and a flexible blade. When it comes to give the raw materials an appropriate shape, the cutting and burning techniques are used. Tools like band saws are used for cutting methods while the tools used for the burning methods may include laser cutting tables and cutting torches.
Punching
Punching refers to the techniques of sheet metal fabrication where a punching machine is used. With the help of this machine, a hole is pierced in the metal object for a specific purpose. The removal of the surplus metal is referred to as clipping.
Shaping
Shaping is another type of fabrication. Presses and other similar types of machines are used to bend or fold the sheet metals. Other operations involved in this process may include beading, crimping, stamping, seaming, grooving, and others. Such operations are mainly used to stiffen the sheet metals to provide them a particular shape, such as forming of tubular sections for circular shapes. Folding and bending operations, on the other hand, are mainly used to form sections and angles. The different types of tools used for shaping operations include hydraulic brake press, rolling machines, wheeling machines, and tube-bending machines. The roll-forming machine, for example, is helpful in creating cylindrical or circular shapes, such as tubes. Press forming operations may also include embossing and cupping.
Machining And Welding
In order to complete construction, sheet metal fabrication uses machining and wielding. A metal fabricator usually has limited machining capabilities, but still mills, metal lathes, and magnetic drills can provide efficient results. However, the most important operation of a metal fabricator is welding. Once the burning, cutting, forming, and machining is complete, all the parts are welded together on the basis of the engineering drawing that is prepared at the beginning of the project.
The final product is then primed and painted. The product then goes through inspection in order to ensure that it meets the desired standard. Considering the complexities involved in the different process of sheet metal fabrication, it is important for you to make sure that the service provider you are signing up with for these types of tasks is highly experienced and has a great level of expertise in such works.(read entire article)(posted on: 2010-01-12)
