A stun gun uses a high voltage and low amperage which temporarily disables an attacker. During the minutes that an attacker is disabled, the victim has the time to escape from the dangerous scene. Because of the low amperage, there is no permanent damage to the attacker, just a loss of balance and mobility.
How does a stun gun work?
The stun gun works by dumping energy which is stored in the gun into the attacker's muscles. This creates a rapid work cycle which instantly depletes the attacker of their blood sugar. The blood sugar is converted into lactic acid. The attacker then lacks the energy that is required to move the muscles and his body begins to become limp and unable to function properly. The impulses that control movement are also interrupted. When the attacker is stunned by the stun gun, they lose their balance and their ability to move. This gives the victim the necessary time to run from the scene.
What types of stun guns are there?
Stun guns do not need to look like a contraption from outer space. In fact, there are many different types and designs of stun guns, including some that are designed to look like a cell phone, tube of lipstick and pen. There are also stun gun flashlights and stun batons.
What are Tasers?
Tasers are another form of self defense and are an electronic controlled device that is also non-lethal. Police studies show that the Taser devices have a higher instant incapacitation rate than a 9mm hand gun.
With the Taser devices, 50,000 volts travel over wires and into the attacker's central nervous system providing the victim with an incredible take down power. Should the attacker be dressed in a heavy coat, the Taser is capable of penetrating up to two cumulative inches of clothing.
A Taser device can stop an attack up to 15 feet away allowing you the distance that is essential to protect yourself and your loved ones from an attack.
With crime being such an enormous threat to every individual in the United States, having protection in place is essential. There is nowhere in the world that is virtually crime free, and the nonlethal devices are a form of protection that are legal to carry. Stun guns and tasers should not only be considered for a woman, but for every individual.
