Wayanad, the twelfth district of Kerala was formed by carving out areas from the neighboring districts of Kozhikode and Kannur. The major towns of Wayanad are Sulthan Batheri, Kalpatta, Mananthavadi, Meppadi, Chundel, Vythiri, Meenangadi, Pulpally, Panamaram and Padinhathara. Apart from the paddy fields, Wayanad is full of coffee, tea, cocoa, pepper, plantain and vanilla plantations.

Chembra peak, Banasura Peak and the Brahmagiri peak are the main peaks for a trekking adventure.

The Kozhikode- Mysore National Highway 212 passes through Wayanad. There are a number of bus services available to reach Wayand from Kerala as well as the neighbouring states. Five ghat roads are mainly used to reach Wayanad.The nearest railway station is at Kozhikode, 75 km from Kalpatta.
