Situated on the banks of the river Yamuna in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is famous for its heritage and architectural beauty. Agra was the capital of Hindustan during the Lodhi and the Mughal dynasties. The city of Agra is home to a lot of splendid forts and monuments including the Taj Mahal. Agra's tourism circuit includes mainly Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort which are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Some epics mark the name Agravana to Agra and the city was considered the abode of Aryans. The city of Agra was founded by Sikender Lodhi of Lodhi dynasty. Later the city was captured by Babur of Mughal dynasty. It was during Babur's reign, some monuments and beautifully planned gardens were constructed in the city of Agra. Akbar contributed a lot to the development of the modern Agra. Akbar was famous for spreading love and brotherhood within various people of different religions and he had even started a new religion called Din-i-llahi. The tomb of Akbar, also called Sikandra, is situated nearby. Sikandra, famous for its architectural beauty, is visited by a lot of people all year around. The construction of this tomb was started by Akbar himself in the year 1600 and was completed by his son Jahangir after Akbar's death. It was during the reign of Shahjahan, the Taj Mahal was built in the memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal, one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World, built completely of marble and has four towers. Various colours are used for the art work and it took 23 years to complete the construction. Agra Fort, made of red stones, was constructed on the other side of the river Yamuna. Shahjahan used to view the Taj Mahal from the Agra Fort during his last days of his life. The 10 day long Agra Mahotsav festival is celebrated every year with much enthusiasm. This festival is conducted by the Agra Tourism department at Shilpgram near Taj Mahal. Exhibitions of arts and crafts are also an attraction here. Shopping in Agra is very important as the city is famous for marbles and Agra Petha, a sweet delicacy. Various miniature models of the Taj Mahal made of marble are available here. The city of Agra is popular for leather items and handicrafts. Sandals, purses and several curios can be found here for sale. The main shopping areas around the city of Agra are Taj Mahal Complex, Kinari Bazaar and Sadar Bazaar. Agra is an ancient city famous the world over as the site of one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal. Set by the banks of the river Yamuna, Agra is situated in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Agra is bordered by the districts of Mathura in the north, Dhaulpur in the south Firozabad in the east and Bharatpur in the west. The ancient city of Agra finds mention in Mahabharata, the Hindu Mythological epic where it is called Agrevana meaning border of the forest. Although according to some legends, the city is said to have been founded by Raja Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput. Taj Mahal, the monument dedicated to eternal love was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1631 and took 20,000 labourers more than 20 years to complete it at the cost of over 32 crore rupees. Made entirely out of white marble, this mausoleum is in memory of Shah Jahan's third wife Mumtaz Mahal who died during childbirth. One of the finest examples of Mughal architecture that combines elements of Persian, Turkish and Indian architecture, Taj Mahal's central tomb is the most renowned features of this edifice. Although the city is most known as the site of Taj Mahal, there are many other historical monuments like the Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Sikandra, Itmad Ud Daula, Sur Sarovar, Jama Masjid, Diwan-i-Am, Buland Darwaza that are popularly visited in Agra. A prominent attraction of Agra is the Agra Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses Anguri Bagh gardens, Diwan-e-Khas, Jahangir's Palace, Ladies' Bazaar, Moti Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Shish Mahal inside its premises. The Itmad-ud-Daulah Tomb in Agra is often referred to as ‘Baby Taj', or ‘Jewel Box' due to the striking similarity in architecture between the two and is also popularly regarded as a draft of the original Taj Mahal. A prominent monument in Agra is the Fatehpur Sikri, built during the 16th century by Mughal Emperor Akbar. The monuments in Fatehpur Sikri include the famous mosque Jama Masjid, Mariam-uz-Zamani's Palace, Buland Darwaza, Tomb of Salim Chisti and Panch Mahal. Few other popular monuments in Agra are the Chini Ka Rauza, Soami Bagh Samadh and the Tomb of Akbar the Great. The Mughals are believed to have been great admirers of lavish gardens built in Islamic style that comprised of pools, a variety of trees and many other features. Agra is home to some of the most beautiful gardens like the Mehtab Bagh, Ram Bagh, Soami Bagh, Shah Jahan Park and the Dayal Bagh. Agra, the famous city where one of the seven wonders of the world, Taj Mahal is situated, is in the state of Uttar Pradesh, about two hundred kilometers from the capital of India, Delhi. Known for heritage tourism, Agra has three main tourist attractions namely Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The great Mughal emperors, who were also architecture connoisseurs, have built many buildings in Agra that made it a favorite heritage tourism site in the later years. Emperor Babur built the famous Aram Bagh or the garden of relaxation, his son Akbar built the Agra Fort and the Fatehpur Sikr,i and the world famous Taj Mahal was built by his grandson Shah Jahan, the latter in the loving memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Taj Mahal, the fame of Agra, is the most famous site here. Taj Mahal is a tomb built out of white marble and is one of the most well preserved architectural masterpieces in the world. There is an entry fee to enter this beautiful monument which is open from 6 am to 7.30 pm. Fatehpur Sikri was the capital of the Mughal Empire for about 10 years. It has inside it the famous Jama Masjid of Agra along with well preserved palaces and courtyards. It was built in the 16th century and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Swami Bagh, Ram Bagh and the Mehtab Bagh are the famous gardens in Agra frequented by tourists. Some of the main temples in Agra also attract a lot of tourists like Balkeshwar temple, Kailash temple, Mankameshwar temple, Prithvinath temple, Rajeshwar temple, Shyam Ji Maharaj temple, Mahakal and Mahakali temple and Rowli Maharaj temple. There are also a number of tombs built in reverence of many great personalities of the Mughal times which have now turned into tourist spots. ITC Mughal, Trident Hilton and the Oberoi Amarvilas are the five star Agra hotels. The star hotels in Agra have pretty good value for money compared to the star hotels in other cities. Considered among the top hotels in Asia, these hotels provide a good view of the Taj from the pavilions on top. Among the mid-range Agra Hotels, Hotel Priya, Hotel Mandakini Vilas, Laurie's Hotel, Hotel Raj, Rajmahal Hotel and Hotel Taj Resorts are favored by many. The budget hotels in Agra are available on a daily rent of Rs. 700 to 900 per day. Hotel Sheetla, Hotel Amba Inn, Hotel Kamal, Hotel Neelkanth, Saniya Palace and Shanthi Lodge are the well known budget Agra Hotels. About 20 trains connect Agra to Delhi everyday which is also easily accessible from Jaipur.
