Telecommunications equipment manufacturers and carriers can provide a myriad of approaches for people to communicate with each other. This affords individuals a variety of options to meet their needs. Of course, one must understand that there are some limitations because of the different components to wide-area communications. There are the physical devices needed at each end of communications sessions. Anyone purchasing communications equipment must be aware of which devices are needed for their application, and especially the mode of transport. The mode of transport simply alludes to the medium, or physical means needed to carry the signal between communications devices. All components must be suitable, and compatible for the communications sessions desired. Potential users of communications devices must have the correct information regarding the equipment they need. If they desire voice communications only, they may require only phones or radio frequency devices. They must then find a telecommunications carrier to subscribe to and obtain the specifications of the carrier to ensure their end devices are compatible with the carrier’s requirements. Any mobile device that uses radio frequency waves must be registered with the FCC so that frequencies do not interfere with other devices and services.
