Energy Recovery Fans   By: susan terlitski
Many HVAC system designers have realized the benefits of using Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) in commercial and institutional buildings. However, as with many newly adopted technologies, questions of how best to apply this product are being raised. One application issue in particular is whether to apply an ERV as a stand alone unit on its own curb, or as a bolt-on accessory to a rooftop air conditioning unit.(read entire article)

High Temperature Exhaust Fans   By: susan terlitski
High temperature exhaust fans can be grouped into two general categories: emergency smoke evacuation and process ventilation. Generally speaking, emergency smoke evacuation fans may never be used, but they must be installed and be capable of exhausting high temperature air and smoke in the event of a fire. In contrast, high temperature process ventilation requires continuous duty exhaust of high temperature air, fumes or particulate. Both application types are uniquely different requiring special construction and system design considerations. In this article, we will examine both types of exhaust applications, looking first at the emergency smoke exhaust category. Since emergency smoke exhaust deals with lifesafety issues, there are governing bodies in place that identify and regulate specific design and performance standards. The administration and organization of the various governing bodies is subject to modification based on the needs of the industry. Currently, four such agencies are Industrial Risk Insurers (IRI), Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc (SBCCI), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL). IRI insures properties all over the world based on an informational manual, which details the construction requirements that belt drive emergency heat and smoke exhausters must meet in order to be covered by IRI.(read entire article)

Practical Methods Of Building Ventilation   By: susan terlitski
It is usually wise to locate the exhaust fans near the area where heat-producing machinery is found in the industrial building. This has the very practical advantage of exhausting this superheated air near its source and preventing a heat build-up in other areas. If side wall locations are to be utilized for air intake or exhaust, it is desirable to consider the prevailing wind direction during the summer season. If the ventilation system can be oriented to take advantage of prevailing winds, the efficiency of the system may be increased considerably, Systems that incorporate roof exhausters are usually not affected by a prevailing wind.(read entire article)

Positive Pressure Fans   By: susan terlitski
The Positive Pressure Blower is a high volume fan use to pressurize a burning structure, in case of fire, in order to force the smoke out. Positive Pressure Blowers are portable, gasoline powered fans, most of which utilize a 5.5 horsepower engine. The theory of positive pressure ventilation is based on the principal of even pressure distribution. Once a structure is pressurized, air and smoke can be forced out through any opening (similar to escaping from an inflated baloon).(read entire article)
