NFPA SBCI is a not-for-profit organization of government officials from the United States and several foreign governments, which serves a strong leadership role in the delivery of model building codes. The purpose of the NFPA can be summarized into three main categories. First, NFPA promotes the science and improves the methods of fire protection and prevention, electrical safety, and other related safety goals. Secondly, it obtains and circulates information on these subjects. And thirdly, it secures the cooperation of its members and the public in establishing proper safeguards against loss of life and property. The fourth organization is Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.. UL is a non-profit, independent organization that maintains and operates laboratories for examination and testing of devices, systems and materials to determine their relation to life, casualty hazards and crime prevention. UL has three safety standards that apply to emergency smoke exhaust products. UL705 is concerned with the mechanical and electrical construction to insure safe operation. All electrical components (motor, wiring, switches, enclosures, etc.) must be ULlisted. UL793 is concerned with the lifting mechanism for the butterfly dampers and the fusible link. In order for a product to be listed in the UL Directory under “Power Ventilators for Smoke Control Systems,” it must meet the requirements of both UL705 and UL793. Additionally, UL must witness a full-scale test of a fan operating for the required time at the specified elevated and temperature.(read entire article)

AHU combine a fan (or several fans) with other components such as heating and / or cooling elements, filters, and dampers as a means to collectively condition the air in a building. AHU is a general term comprised of many specific types of air handlers including: Make-Up Air Units (MAU), Packaged Units (PU), Rooftop Units (RTU), and Energy Recovery Units (ERU). Air handlers range from very small, low CFM light-duty construction to very large, high CFM heavy-duty construction, and are used in many types of buildings that require air conditioning such as office buildings, hospitals, universities, schools, manufacturing facilities, and data centers. Typically, air passing through an AHU is clean and varies in temperature depending on the specific application. Energy consumption and noise are often important considerations when selecting a fan for an AHU. Plenum fans and DWDI fans are commonly found in these units, but are not used exclusively. The signs that You need Make-up Air include: 1) Poor paint finishing due to dust, moisture or fumes. Exhaust fans will compete with each other for the available air. They are going to pull air from anywhere they can. Paint booth fans may lose out in the competition causing the paint to retain moisture and collect dust that is not removed by the exhaust fans. 2) Walls have moisture being pulled through. This shows that your plant is under negative pressure. Cement walls have small cracks that allow water to penetrate. Fans pull from every place air can get through. This includes walls. When fans pull air through walls, water from rain and other outdoor sources will also be pulled through. This will cause firring strips to rot, ruin wall coverings and paint jobs. 3) Smoke, haze and dust floating in the air. As you look across the factory is it hazy? You should be able to see clearly from one end of your factory to the other without the view being blocked by haze and smoke. If the area clears when a window or door is opened, it is starved for air. This indicates that the exhaust fans are competing for air. Welding, molding, metal cutting or many other processes can generate fumes that need to be exhausted or the factory could become hazy.(read entire article)
