One of the hallmarks of life in the digital age is our heavy reliance on electronic machinery and smart gadgetry. You may not notice it, but many of the things we use and encounter on a daily basis—from smartphones and refrigerators to automatic sliding doors and elevators—are now built with advanced microprocessors for enhanced capability. Inverter generators are fast becoming a normal fixture of our everyday life, but they still remain so terribly misunderstood. Many people still do not know the differences between a conventional generator and an inverter generator, and some even think that the two terms are interchangeable.
To start, both conventional generators and inverter generators use fossil fuels such as diesel, petrol and propane gas to run their internal combustion engine. But the similarities end there. In conventional generators, the engine powers the alternator that produces the electricity. The engine must operate a constant speed of 3600 rpm, regardless of the load, to create the current (e.g. 220 V at 60 Hz) that most appliances require. If the engine’s speed wavers, so will the frequency of the output. The power produced by conventional generators can destroy sensitive electronics like computers and smartphones.
The technology behind inverter generators are a recent development, and the machine is only made possible by high-tech magnets and advanced circuitry. Like conventional generators, inverter generators produce AC power, but that current is then transformed to DC, and then inverted back to standard AC power. The resulting AC power is no longer in block waves, but in single phase, pure sine waves at standard voltage and frequency. The power generated by inverter generators is clean and can be used to power any device that uses microprocessors.
Conventional generators are still the most popular types of generators, but inverter generators are set to overtake conventional types once our world becomes more and more digital. Here are some reasons why you should choose an inverter generator over a conventional one.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, inverter generators produce clean, pure sine wave output which can power any appliance or device with sensitive circuitry. This would not be a big deal a decade or two ago, when mobile devices were are their infancy and smart objects have not been invented yet. Today, however, practically most household appliances now have microprocessors built in, from televisions and refrigerators to washing machines and home security systems.
The clean power produced by inverter generators enables you to energise sophisticated electronics like laptops and smart TVs even if the power is out. You never have to worry about power surges destroying your expensive gadgets.
Increased energy efficiency
Conventional generators run at a constant speed to produce its maximum rated power at all times. If a conventional petrol generator is designed to produce 5000 W of power, the output will be at a constant 5000 W even if you are just using 500 W of power. You cannot reduce its power output to save on fuel because conventional generators simply are not designed that way.
Inverter generators, on the other hand, are far more efficient than conventional generators. The generator’s advanced electronics can detect how much of its output is actually consumed. The microprocessor, in turn, can lower the speed at which the generator works to produce only the required amount of power. This feature will save you a lot of fuel and money. Some models can even lower the fuel consumed by as much as 40 percent.
Inverter generators produce far less noise than conventional generators. They produce less noise because the microprocessor can regulate the speed at which the motor is running. Lower speeds translate to lesser noise. Inverter generators are also fitted with noise-reducing features like mufflers, sound-dampening casing, and quieter engines. This makes the generator ideal for use in situations where you do not want to attract attention, and where noise is regulated. Your ears will also appreciate the quiet operation of an inverter generator.
Inverter generators are designed to be lighter and much more compact than conventional generators. Because they are a relatively recent invention, engineers have had the freedom to use newer and lighter materials, and apply more modern methods to better integrate the generator’s different mechanical parts. The electronics have also replaced some of the heavier parts.
One of the best features of inverter generators is you can hook multiple generators together to increase the power output. This feature is called parallel functioning. You can connect two or more inverter generators so they function as one. Their sine waves will be synchronised so functionality will not be compromised.
