Looking for a way to organise your messy outdoor space? Backyard full of toys and sports equipment? Doing all your gardening in the garage? Tools placed everywhere but the tool shed? If you said yes to all those questions, you may need to invest in outdoor storage solutions.

Outdoor storage can be as simple as a few crates and outdoor storage boxes to as complex as storage sheds and garage extensions. If you’re thinking of upgrading your outdoor storage, you may have to consider a few factors before selecting the right storage solution for you. There are a lot of storage options out there, and it is up to you whether it is right for you or not. Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t fret. I’ve drawn up a list to help you in your journey to a clutter-free and organised outdoor space.

1 - Strive for a balance between quality and price

Do not let the cost be the sole determining factor for choosing the right outdoor storage for you. Some people automatically choose the cheapest option, without thinking about its long-term quality and dependability. While well-built storage will almost always be more expensive than a low quality, realise that you may have to spend more buying shoddy products because you are going to have to replace them often. Meanwhile, a quality outdoor storage box will only need to be bought once, and can dependably serve you for years to come. Think smart, buy smart.

2 - Outdoor aesthetics

Outdoor storage options need not feel out of place in your outdoor space. Just because your outdoor storage box or shed is made out of plastic or metal does not mean it cannot fit into your overall theme. Choose an outdoor storage option that complements the overarching aesthetics of your home. Many storage options are made of sturdy but attractive material like hardwood and rattan. Utilise the colour table and choose one that goes with (or against, if you’re that type) the colour of your outdoor space.

3 - Make it blend

Outdoor storage boxes, if not chosen carefully, have a tendency to stick out like a sore thumb. For instance, your home could be designed in the Mission Revival Style, but it probably won’t help your home’s architecture if there’s a stack of plain plastic boxes in the middle of your patio. Arrange your storage options in a way that they blend into the house, or into the landscape. You could plant flower beds around the storage, or place it next to tasteful vases or sculpture.

4 - What’s it made of

One of the most important factors you will have to consider is the material the outdoor storage is made of. Natural wood is thought of as the most appealing and inviting option, as it fits into practically any style and aesthetic. However, wood, if left exposed to the elements, rots pretty quickly. You will have to invest in protection for your wooden outdoor storage boxes and sheds. On the plus side, some woods, with the correct treatment, are naturally-resistant to rot.

Metals like copper, iron and steel are stylish and modern options for outdoor storage. They’re also more durable than wood. Copper, in particular, turns a beautiful shade of green if left outdoors. However, some metals are susceptible to corrosion, especially if you live by the sea or in a place with high rainfall or humidity. Choose a resistant metal like aluminum and stainless steel.

Lastly, plastic is practically the most durable among the three. It doesn’t rot, it doesn’t decay, it doesn’t rust. Plastic will hold its shape and condition for years, decades even. However, it may be difficult to find plastic outdoor storage that fits your home’s aesthetics.

5 - DIY vs. Professional

If you’re thinking of investing in a large storage like an outdoor shed or a multi-compartment closet, you will have to decide whether to hire a professional to install your storage or to do it yourself. It may be more expensive to hire professionals, but you’d be rest assured of a good quality. A DIY project, on the other hand, could either turn out great or end a spectacular failure, depending on your skill level.
