Power of Hot Melt Adhesive
By Expert Author: Brian Clark
Hot melt adhesives have three main supports.
1). The backbone polymer, that provides the 3D framework while directing the chemical structure.
2). The resins are tackifiers that provide the initial adhesion and a blend of waxes, oils, diluents and chain extenders.
Though wax is a part of the third support, it is slowly and steadily gaining ground as the fourth pedestal which works as a performance-enhancing additive. Waxes lower the gumminess of the hot melt glue. The wax remains solid in room temperature but once above 40°C it melts without decomposing. It produces a less sticky liquid that enhances the mix of polymer and resin. The final formulation is easily applicable on a wet surface.
Wax Types
Certain waxes used in the hot melt adhesive are natural derivatives. They can be classified under the vegetable, animal and mineral classification system. The common mineral waxes include microcrystalline waxes and paraffin, byproducts involved in the process of refining.
The paraffin waxes are amalgams of hydrocarbons which are highly crystalline in content. Again, the petroleum waxes contain larger proportions of hydrocarbons than the normal paraffin.
The rapid progress made by polymer chemists in the last decade has enabled a variety of wax weapons in the hot melt adhesive formulator. These weapons are not derived from nature.
The synthetic waxes can be further customized to prepare desirable glue additives. Take for example the molecules that involve the non-polar and polar at the same time. This enhances the adhesion and compatibility.
Hot melt adhesive and waxes
The various chemicals that are used in the hot melt adhesives are non polar. These non-polar chemicals do not blend well with paper and similar material. Therefore one can easily opt for the wax additives. The waxes with oxidized and extended maleic anhydride can be used in order to enhance the strength of bonding between the surfaces like steel and glass.
In the recent times, the hot melt adhesives industry has been growing really fast. That is because the industry allows higher productivity rate that allows the users to keep the capital cost at a lower level. Waxes are convenient and cannot be ignored when it comes to create the hot melt glue.
About the Author:
Brain Clark has performed some in-depth research in adhesives available in the market. Due to various lags in the industry of adhesives even a few years back, Clark took to the understanding of the product. He has written about various adhesives like the hot-melt kind, the anaerobic, water-based, silicon sealants and many more. To know more, please visit: www.action-adhesives.ie
