"In all things of nature, there is something of the Marvelous."

--Aristotle

The great philosopher and Scientist from ancient Greece in his infinite wisdom figured it out back then that Nature is the Supreme Force to whom we must pay due respect.

Taking cue from the maestro, the modern word is now coming around to the view that remedies to most ailments afflicting mankind including diabetes may be found in Nature.

Today, we will take a look at some of the herbs and plants that are thought to be useful in treating and preventing the onset of diabetes:

Gymnema Sylvestre: The name, rather appropriately' translates in Hindi as "sugar destroyer (gurmar)." Studies conducted on the plant show that it may help stimulate the production of insulin. It is known to not have adverse effects.

Momordica charantia: Otherwise known as Bitter Melon or Gourd or Hagala in Kannada originated in India. Apart from its culinary credentials across Asia, it is also thought to aid cells to better manage glucose and block sugar absorption in the intestine.

Ginseng: This 'all-healing' herb has been used ...
... in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries. Revered for its immunity-boosting and disease-fighting abilities, it is also thought to help increase insulin secretion and lower blood glucose levels.

Fenugreek: The Methi seed which is high in fibre content is thought to boost the release of insulin. It is a ubiquitous presence in Indian kitchens, which probably explains why our ancestors thought it fit to incorporate certain ingredients in our cuisine.

Vaccinium Myrtillus: The Bilberry is another friend of humans from the berries family, and is full of antioxidants. It is thought to prevent damage to tiny blood vessels in the retina of the eye(retinopathy). Studies also suggest that it may lower blood sugar.

Finally, as the saying goes, 'the earth has music for those who listen." It's certainly time to pay heed to the ancient wisdom!
