Often the debate goes on whether to prefer night vision scopes or thermal scopes. There are numerous versions of testimonials available that make it more confusing to choose and for beginners it is a long lost maze of opinions. Thermal rifle scopes work on a single technology that is to detect the heat, while the Night Vision Rifle Scope work on three different technologies that include thermal imaging as well.

Let’s understand the working technology, features and descriptions of the night vision scopes in a bit detailed manner-

Night Vision Scopes Working techniques- night vision scopes work on three different techniques:-

Image Intensification (I2) - this methodology is the most common one. It uses the ambient light coming from different sources like moon, stars or it can be from any artificial source. The devices that work on this technology are even able to detect the lower end of the IR spectrum, which is invisible to the human eyes but is present. Amplification of these feable lights is done by an electronic tube that is capable of amplifying the light to thousand times. The image is then projected on the lens. The image quality has been improved a lot in the latest Gen III and GENIV devices. The only drawback is that it needs some amount of light to operate. It will not work in complete darkness.

The I2 devices come in generations starting from 0 to IV. The basic difference in the generations is based upon the intensifier technology used to capture the ambient light.

Gen I uses accelerated electrons that strike a phosphorus surface inside the intensifier tube. A micro channel plate is extra in Gen II that increases the number of electrons which strike the phosphorous screen, thus improving the performance of the device. On the other hand Gen III has been modified with Gallium Arsenide photocathode that significantly multiplies the electrons than the previous generations. The quality of the image increases as the generation increases and so do the price. Most of the times Gen I and Gen II generations are preferred as they are available at low prices and perform fairly.

Thermal Imaging- it works on the emitted heat from the body of the prey. The heat radiations comprise the higher end of the light spectrum. Moving objects, animals, human emit more heat or light than the cooler objects. This makes it easy to distinguish between the animal and its surroundings. The thermal imaging devices capture the IR energy which is passed through a microbolometer on Focal Plane Array. With the advancement in the technology they are getting more compact and sensitive. Thermal imagers works equally well in both day and night, thus are mostly preferred more for hunting excursions.

The benefits of using thermal imagers are-

Can work in absolute darkness to, unlike I2

Ability to view through smoke, dust, fog, rain

Can detect camouflage

Better vision covering long distances.

Fusion- As the name suggests, this works on the combined principle of the above mentioned technologies. It captures both the infrared energy and the ambient light. Fusion Technology gives the best experience under every light condition- low light or no light.
