Must Know Facts For Students Who Are Planning To Study In Canada

Canada is known for providing quality education to internationaltudents at an affordable cost. This is why students from across the world come to Canada on a regular basis for their higher studies. At present about 10% of the university population of Canada comes from abroad. There are approximately 353,000 international students in Canada from which 14% are from India. The following are some must know facts for students who are planning to study in Canada-

1. High Rankings- There is 98 Universities in Canada with multiple institutes and colleges. 26 of these 98 Universities have been listed in the QS World University Rankings of 2016-2017. There are 3 Universities in Canada in the top 50, 10 Universities in Canada in the top 300 and the remaining 13 Universities listed in the top 700 institutes of the list. Canada is ranked in the top 5 nations that helps in the provision of a stronger higher educational system as per the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings of 2016. There are four cities in Canada that is listed in the QS 2016 Best Student Cities in the World and they are Quebec, Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver. ...

2. Intake System

There are 3 intakes for students in a year and they are in January, May and September. May has the least intake and September has the maximum intake. For the month of September, you should begin the application process for the Universities at least 1 to 1.5 years in advance as the University closes their applications about 5 to 6 months before the intake. The January intake for students closes from August to September and the May intake closes from September to November. The intake for September closes from December to January.

3) September (major intake)

University application should start 1 to 1.5 years in advance as universities closes their application 5-6 months prior to intake, i.e. January intake closes from August to September; May intake closes from September to November; September intake closes from December to January. The applications for these colleges close about one to two months before intake and the deadlines on these applications depends on the Universities you apply to.

Undergraduate Degrees In Canada

If you plan on going to Canada after high school, the following are the three options you can choose-

• Diploma Course: 2 years
• Advance Diploma Course: 3 years
• Bachelor's Degree: 4 years


Colleges and universities in Canada offer these academic programs. For pursuing graduation degrees, most students prefer to study in a university. Students also have the option to apply to universities and colleges under the Student Partners Programme or SPP. This is a joint initiative established in 2009 for students from India to provide students with a streamlined visa and admission process. At present there are 47 colleges and universities that fall under the SPP.

Eligibility criteria

For a diploma and advanced diploma, you should score 55% in the best four subjects with a 6.0 overall IELTS band with 5.5 minimum bands in each. You are allowed a one year study gap if justified.

For a Bachelor’s degree you need have an 80% score with an IELTS score of 6 minimum bands in each.

For postgraduate degrees in Canada

When it comes to studying post graduate and a Master’s degree in Canada. The Universities in Canada accept 16 years of academic education before you apply for a Master’s degree. This is why Indian students need to undergo a one year postgraduate, diploma or a graduate certificate course in Canada to make up for the required 16 years of education. Students should score at least 70 to 75% with an overall IELTS band of 6.5 with 6 minimum bands in each. The duration for a postgraduate certificate or diploma course is from 8 months to one year. In the 8 month programme, there are two semesters the duration is 4 months and in the one year programme, there are three semesters.

For eligibility, the student needs to score 55 percent in academic scores with 6.5 overall IELTS band with minimum 6 bands each. For an MBA degree, you need to complete a 15 year academic education with a minimum work experience of 1 year. There are however a few universities that give you this flexibility. The eligibility for application is 70 to 75 percent. For GMAT you should have a score of 580-600 and for IELTS your overall band score should be 6.5.

Permanent Residency (PR)

The Post Graduation Work Permit Program or PGWPP allows students to apply for a work permit post the course completion.
Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) allows students to apply for a work permit after course completion. The stay back in the country option depends upon the course that you opt for. For the 8 months program, the stay back period is 8 months, for the 1 year program, the stay back period you get a one year work permit and for 2 years or more, you get a 3 year work permit.

The processing of your application takes up to 2 years and the immigration laws of the nation requires you should stay in the nation for at least 3 months.
