We all understand that our climate can be harsh during summer and winter can be an uncomfortable time. For this reason, it is no surprise that air conditioning has become so ubiquitous in our society. Many of us, still suffer with older systems that are ineffectual and inefficient or perhaps have moved into a property where no AC is installed. In this article, we will take a closer look at some alternative domestic air conditioning considerations before choosing a new air conditioning system and having it installed.

Do You Need a New AC Unit?

There are a few things that can be done to improve the performance of an older AC system. Insulation is a good place to start. Many people only consider insulation for heating purposes. In fact, insulation is also a vital way to keep your home cool by keeping the cold air in your home longer. Air leaks at doors and windows are the main cause of escaping cool and warm air in your home. They can be tricky to locate without professional help, but sealing them up will make the temperature in your home more consistent.

Look at Your Other Appliances:

Out of date home ...
... appliances can generate a lot of ambient heat raising the temperature in your home. The main culprit here is usually an older refrigerator, but other appliances including older televisions can be to blame as well. It may be time to upgrade some domestic appliances or try and ensure that they are switched off when they are not in use. Another area to look at is light bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs generate approximately 90% less heat than an incandescent bulb.

Becoming Reflective:

It may sound strange, but just like cricket whites reflect the sun, you can do the same with your home. Painting your house in a lighter colour can really help to reduce the temperature in your home. Obviously, this is not a substitute for a residential air conditioning system, but it can supplement one and help to reduce the temperature naturally. Roof shingles can be fitted that will reflect light, but be careful as the glare they generate can be hard on your eyes if stared at directly. Window shades, blinds, and curtains can also help if you draw them during the hottest parts of the day.
