Lifting devices and products are important for a number of activities in construction, load transfer, etc. These devices are aided by wire ropes since practically no lifting activity can be accomplished without it. Ropes are the crucial functional unit of a lifting device that must be carefully chosen in order to improve the work productivity. If you don’t know how to choose the perfect steel wire rope for your business then this write-up will greatly help you.

Selecting a Steel Wire Rope isn’t an easy task especially if you have the least knowledge about mechanical devices and their work. Most wire ropes come in 6, 7, 12, 19, 24, or 37 wire strands but the ones with six are commonly found.

When selecting a wire rope, these are five crucial characteristics that you must look for –

1. Tensile Strength – Tensile strength is the ability of a steel wire rope to bear the load. A wire rope should be chosen depending on its tensile strength. The higher it may be the better it will have the ability to display the strength. When you compromise on the tensile strength of a wire rope, you are more likely to ...
... experience the breaking of wire rope in-between the task, which is never good.

2. Crushing Strength – Crushing strength is the ability of the steel wire rope to withstand the crushing forces that can distort its shape. Higher crushing strength means that the steel wire rope will withstand the load that falls vertically on it. This characteristic is often neglected but should be taken into consideration as it may affect the overall life of the wire rope.

3. Fatigue Resistance – Every wire rope moves and bends whenever it is used for any task. Fatigue resistance, therefore, becomes a crucial characteristic that you must look before buying. When a wire rope operates at a high speed, wear and tear may happen quickly and thus greater flexibility is needed. A special variety of wire rope known as Lang Lay ropes is considered best for fatigue resistance.

4. Abrasion Resistance – Abrasion is the wear and tear of the outer metal layer of the wire rope when it runs across drums and sheaves. The rate of abrasion is highly dependent on the operating speed of the wire as well as the quality of the metal which is used. Wire ropes should come with high abrasion resistance which is usually possible with the ones made of larger wires. Also, harder steel brings more abrasion resistance to the wire ropes.

5. Corrosion Resistance – Corrosion can be a curse for wire ropes that are made of steel. It causes dissolution of the metal in an environment having high moisture content. When faced harsh climatic conditions, the top layer of metal corrodes as a result of a chemical reaction that occurs naturally. Wire ropes that are galvanized provide high resistance to corrosion and are often preferred for lifting activities.
Do make a checklist of all these characteristics before investing your money in any particular steel wire rope. Considering all these features will save you from future hassles that can be faced while operating the lifting devices.

Combine the wire rope with Wire Rope Sling to amplify the performance of the lifting device. This will increase the capability of lifting loads while improving the productivity.
