Advantages of using Hindi language

India is linguistically diverse country. Starting from Jammu - Kashmir in north to Kanyakumari in south an Gujrat in West to Arunachal Pradesh in east, people speak different languages and dialect. Few of them are - Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telgu, Kannada, Malyalam, Urdu, Marwari, Haryanvi etc. Indian constitution considers 15 languages as national languages and English and Hindi as the official languages. From the time before independence to present time, there has always been controversy regarding "One India - One language" and imposing Hindi as the national language.

People who support 'Hindi imposition' as the national language believe that Hindi language represents our culture.They also believe that promotion of hindi must be a matter of respect for all Indians. Also, if it is made the national language, it will gradually spread worldwide and gain recognition, as India ranks second in the population across the globe. They also pressume that of all the indigenous languages only Hindi is understood all over the country. They are unaware of the reality.

The reality is that majority of Indians donot know Hindi. According to 2001 census figures, just 45% people speak or know Hindi. Only 25% people in India have declared Hindi as their mother tongue language. The remaining people speak variants of Hindi like Bhojpuri, Magadhi, Maithili, Rajasthani, Marwari,etc. All put together, the speakers of Hindi and its dialects are about 45%. Some Hindi supporters argue that Hindi can be made compulsory and everyone will learn it over a period of time. This is only because they might not aware of the pain of learning a new language. Hindi is same to the non – Hindi as English is to all Indians – 'a foreign language'. There are people who know and understand Hindi but when it comes to expressing their views or giving presentations, they are not comfortable with it. So, languages should be used for convenience and not be imposed.

Hindi got its name from the Persian word Hind, meaning “Land of the Indus River”, today of which mostly flows through Pakistan. Also passes through Tibet and Northern India. It is also known as the great trans-Himalayan river of South Asia.
Hindi in its present form emerged through different stages, during which it was known by other names. The earliest form of old Hindi was Apabhramsa. The Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi as the Official Language of the Union on 14 September 1949. Hence it is celebrated as Hindi Day.

In the year 1881 Bihar accepted Hindi as its sole official language replacing Urdu and thus became the first state of India to adopt Hindi.
It became the official language of India in 1965.

Hindi is also spoken in some countries outside India, such as in Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Pakistan, Nepal etc.

Spoken by almost 500 million people, making it one of the most spoken languages worlwide. Others include Mandarin, English and Spanish.

Just like European languages, Hindi is written from left to right.

Hindi language includes 11 vowels and 33 consonants.

Hindi language doesn't have any articles (like we have 'the' and 'a' in English).

Unlike in English, in Hindi all nouns have genders, either masculine or feminine. Adjectives and verbs change according to gender. Learning the grammar aspect of Hindi Language is usually one of the most difficult steps in learning Hindi.

One of the easiest languages to learn or read, as pronunciation is exactly as written, with each letter of the alphabet having an independent sound.

Prem Sagar (meaning Ocean of Love) by Lallu Lal, published in 1805, is considered to be the first book to be published in Khari Boli, the dialect of Hindi which is the basis for the standard Hindi used today.
