Maha Shivratri Char Pahar Puja

Pahar, which is more commonly pronounced peher, is a traditional unit of time used in India. One pahar nominally equals three hours, and there are eight pahars in a day. In India, the measure is primarily used in North India. Traditionally, night and day were each allocated four pahars, or “watches.” The first pahar of the day (or din pahar) was timed to begin at sunrise, and the first pahar of the night (raat pahar) was timed to begin at sunset.

Maha Shivratri , the night of Lord Shiva, is commemorated by many with the powerful Char Peher Puja, commencing 6:30pm in the evening, after sunset, and ending it with a final puja at around 6:30am at dawn the next day, with a Maha Yagya. The 4 peher puja is typically performed as follows:

Ratri First Prahar Puja Time = 6:30pm to 09:30pm
Ratri Second Prahar Puja Time = 09:30pm to 12:35pm at night
Ratri Third Prahar Puja Time = 12:35pm to 03:40am
Ratri Fourth Prahar Puja Time = 03:40am to 06:40am

Many also choose to perform puja during the day time, on Shivratri day, over the course of the daytime char peher. Performing this puja at home is believed to garner great positive vibes and strength to the place and the people residing there. It is believed that Lord Shiva, pleased by such puja, blesses His devotees with strength, courage, peace and prosperity.

The puja is complete and effective only when it is performed in the prescribed manner and the mantras chanted the right way. This needs guidance from someone who is knowledgeable, sincere and has that ability to take you a step closer in your spiritual journey.
