How To Choose The Right Sling For Your Project
Total Articles: 1
Slings have played a crucial role in movement of goods for many years. The ability to move materials of all shapes and sizes from one location to another, whether at the workplace or on transit is crucial to all segments of any industry. The process of moving the products is as important as the safety of the products and the operators involved in the whole process. This makes the selection process for the right sling in paramount exercise.
There are various types of slings available. They include chain slings, web slings, wire rope slings, synthetic slings, and metal mesh slings. These slings are suitable under different circumstances.
When choosing the right type of sling to manipulate and lift loads, it’s important to consider a number of factors.
Here is a guide on the key factors that you should consider when choosing the right sling for your project.
Factors to consider when choosing a sling:
Size of the load:
Chain slings are known to be strong, heavy and extremely durable. They can be used to lift a wide range of loads in various applications regardless of weight or size. On the other hand, synthetic slings and web slings are quite flexible but light. They can break or snap easily when regularly used to lift heavy loads. Chain slings are preferred in a project that involves rigging of small loads.
Nature of the material:
A flexible or fragile load can easily collapse or be damaged by its own weight if not well supported.
Chain slings are made of steel that can easily scratch fragile material and ruin their surface. They are not encouraging for projects that involves fragile and expensive materials. On the other hand, other slings such as synthetic slings have a smooth surface which makes them ideal for lifting fragile and expensive materials.
Adjustment and reach:
Some slings can be easily adjusted to suit different needs and to reach different distances. Chain slings can be fabricated with adjustable reach. Synthetic and round slings are very flexible and can stretch helping them mold to the shape of the load to grip the load securely.
Chain slings are ideal for applications that involves heated materials as they can withstand heat without breaking or weakening. Other slings such as the synthetic slings cannot be used in projects that involves exposure to high temperatures as they can easily break and cause accidents.
Durability and performance of slings are determined by the working conditions that they are exposed to. Chain slings can be used in most working conditions as they do not deteriorate when exposed to chemicals and acid. Round slings can also be used in projects that involves exposure to ultraviolet degradation as they are enclosed in a double layer woven jacket.
Synthetic and wire rope chains in the other hand are quite vulnerable as they deteriorate when exposed to chemicals and acids. They can also easily tear or snap if not well taken care of during operations.
Round slings wear points can be moved around to extend the life of the sling.
Never use worn out or damaged sling
Always inspect slings before use
Never exceed a sling working load limit
Avoid exposing slings to chemicals or temperature that exceed their limitation
Never shorten slings with bolts, knots, or any other makeshift device.
Make sure that loads are well balanced to avoid tipping or slippage.
Follow inspection and removal regulations when dealing with work out or damaged slings.
Before choosing a sling for your project, it’s important to consider the sustainability of the sling to your project as well as the safety of its operators. Based on the above factors, chain slings have an upper hand over other slings as they are ideal for most applications.
