Laptop Screen Repair In 10 Steps
Total Articles: 307
Many laptop owners end up looking dark, cracked, black, blurry or just hard to read the screens. Broken screens are a common problem with laptops because they are portable, droppable, and sometimes get rough treatment.
If your screen image problem is due to a faulty laptop screen, and you are adept at a screwdriver, you can replace it yourself. The repair is usually simple, and can be done in an hour depending on the computer.
• Philips screwdriver
• Elmer's glue
• Credit card
• Plastic container for parts
Step 1: Unplug your notebook and remove the battery. This step is important not to damage the electrical components.
Step 2: Locate the rubber bumpers around the plastic envelope surrounding the screen. Pull each of these off, and save them in a small container. Under each of these there will be screws that we will loosen in the next step.
Step 3: Remove all screws under the rubber bumpers. Keep them in your plastic container. You may also need to remove the screw for the hinges depending on the computer model you have.
Step 4: Gently remove the plastic bezel from the rear case. Be patient, and persistent with this step. You may need to use the credit card to slide gently between the plastic front bezel and the back cover. Many manufacturers use a type of glue to hold these pieces together. The glue is strong enough to make you crack the bezel if you pull too hard.
Step 5: There will be additional screws fixing the screen to an inner frame. Loosen these screws and remove them. Once these screws are removed, the screen must be clear of its frame. The screen will be connected by a wire. Unplug this wire and lift the screen off its frame.
Step 6: At the back of the screen you will find the references. For HP, these will be numbers like LTN160A (T1) (01). You will need this exact part number to order a new screen from a supplier. Tip: Do not accept anything other than an exact match on these numbers; otherwise you could buy a screen with a connector that does not match your computer.
Step 7: Order parts from a reputable supplier. Make sure the provider sends you an exact match or a compatible part for your computer.
Step 8: Plug your new display into the laptop using the cable connector. Plug in the computer and turn it on. The new screen should light up. You can test the screen this way before putting everything back in place. If the screen is working, then unplug the computer; make sure the battery is removed.
Step 9: Return the steps and replace the computer.
Step 10: Use Elmers glue to reassemble the bumpers.
These 10 basic steps cover the replacement of screens or monitors for most laptops. For laptop owners who do not feel like they could handle this repair, a qualified computer repair shop should be able to do it for you at a reasonable cost. If you cannot find a store locally and you are comfortable to ship your computer for repair, there will be more choice and a potentially better price.
