To make technological inventions easily accessible to the general public, many electronics companies are coming up with low budget products which claim to provide services at par with their costly versions. This is mainly because these printers emit the ultra-fine particles also termed as UFPs. A typical desktop printer function on the concept of ‘fused deposition modeling ‘or FDM in which solid plastic filament is served through a heated nozzle. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA) are the two types of plastics that are mainly used in 3D printing. PLA is a plant-based material and is comparatively more flexible than ABS. ABS can emit a toxic and carcinogenic chemical called styrene. A chemical named lactide is emitted from PLA filament.

Carriers of health threatening elements

The study shows that both PLA and ABS can emit extraordinary levels of nano-sized ultra-fine particles. These emissions of ultrafine particles are a possible threat for health. Surprisingly UFP emissions can come from many household gazettes especially kitchen gazettes like cooking using electrical frying pan, grilling, and electric stove. But due to lack of awareness their health hazards are not clear to consumers. Studies shows that UFP can cause serious health hazard though not necessarily life threatening risks. Its emission could lead to respiratory system malfunctioning like asthma, lung disease or heart disease.

As these low cost printers have taken the global market by storm and also as their health threats are not widely spread among masses, these printers are becoming more accessible everywhere like in Australia. Many companies have launched low cost 3D printers in Australian market and made them accessible for every pocket due its reasonable and economical pricing making it easier to converting imaginings into actuality.
The advent of 3D printers are boosting business in Australia as it is instrumental in increasing the revenues of many companies with its new products which are more creative in nature. These printers can cause harm only when not used in a specified ways. Researchers suggest that the best way to keep the printers is near a window or to a place where proper ventilation is there. Setting up of printers in places where there is no proper ventilation or where there is less scope of exposure to fresh air should be strictly avoided. Also avoid installing such products where you spend time for relaxation like bedrooms.

It is very difficult to shun away from technology in modern era. But its implementation should be wisely done where it is a promise and not a threat.
