Freeing Up Disk Space In Windows
Total Articles: 1
But how long will you keep on doing this? The hard drives always seem to be full, especially if you’re using a solid-state drive (SSD). Here are some easy ways to free up disk space in your Windows system.
Empty The Recycle Bin
Recycle bin is a great feature which helps us restore files, pictures, or videos which were deleted by accident. But, it is even more useful to us when we run short of disk space. Simply right-click on the recycle bin icon and empty it. If you can’t find the icon, then go to the Start menu, go to Settings, select System, and then to Storage. Look for and click Temporary files. There you will find Recycle bin. Select Empty recycle bin and click yes to proceed.
Delete Temporary Files And Downloads
There is a section in Windows called the Temporary files section. It is used to manage document editing, some application processes, downloads, and printing tasks. These files get deleted automatically, but sometimes they hang on. You can delete these temp files permanently by selecting Delete temporary files in the Temporary files folders. The downloads can be deleted by clicking on Settings, then System, and Storage. Select PC and go back to Temporary files where you can see Downloads. Select View downloads and delete any files that you no longer need.
Save Files to a Different Drive
If your computer has multiple hard drives, you may find yourself running out of space on one drive. Fortunately, you can fix this by changing your default save locations for apps, documents, music, pictures, and videos. To do this, open the Settings menu and go to Storage under System. Under Save locations, select a different drive for each of the categories.
Hibernate allows you to startup faster where it saves a snapshot of your files and drivers before shutting down consuming hard drive space as the amount of RAM you have. Disabling Hibernate frees up space instantly.
Windows has a built-in disk cleanup utility that allows you to clear up space by removing various files like temporary Internet files, system error memory dump files, and even previous Windows installations.
You can find Disk Cleanup in the Start menu, under All apps. Go to Windows Administrative Tools and then to Disk Cleanup. Select the drive you want to clean up and click OK. If you want to delete system files then click Cleanup system files.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. They simply eat up resources leading to less disk space. For this, go to the Settings option under Start menu. Select System and then select Apps & features. Here you get a list of all the downloaded Apps. You can see which apps are greedy of more data and can delete the ones you do not require by clicking on Uninstall.
