Difference Between Corporate Finance And Investment Banking Careers
Total Articles: 5
This century has seen a dramatic evolution in both investment banking and corporate finance. This is because financial operations are more sophisticated and also subject to more particular regulations. Clients these days are cautious and more demanding than ever. It is not a surprise that an evolution occurred simultaneously among the specialized professionals working in these fields.
Generally speaking, investment banking and corporate finance aren't too different from each other. Investment banks are required for raising capital for other companies via security operations in equity and debt markets. Investment bankers also help in the coordination and execution of mergers and acquisitions, offering services and advice to big clients and performing complex financial analysis.
Corporate finance is a title for all business divisions that handle the financial activities of a firm. This makes it a bit confusing to differentiate between corporate finance and investment banking because, as per the context, investment banking may count as a category of corporate finance. Investment banking firms may also have divisions for corporate finance.
There is, however, a distinction between investment banking jobs and corporate finance jobs that is generally accepted. While a corporate finance professional has to deal with daily financial operations and handle long and short term business goals, an investment banker has to focus on raising capital, conducting M&A deals and running private placements. Simply put, investment banking is used to grow a company, while corporate finance is used to manage a company.
Skills and Education
Investment banking is regarded among the premier fields of the financial industry. An investment banking career can take one of two standard paths. A student can either attend a reputed undergraduate university and step into the field as an analyst, or earn an MBA degree from a business school and have a break through as an associate.
A variety of viable career options are available in corporate finance since the types of jobs in this field are plenty. Individuals can opt for professions such as business analysts, treasurers, analysts, account managers, advisers, and accountants, among many others. The skills required are few, such as effective communication skills and an understanding of corporate finance.
The experience and academic credentials necessary for becoming an investment banker are undoubtedly higher than those required for positions in corporate finance. Those interested in
investment banking should focus on degrees in economics, banking, investment analysis or finance. Most candidates take low level positions or intern at large banks in order to gain experience, while many work as analysts at other places before they receive their MBA.
It is unquestionably challenging to nail down an appropriate salary for an average position in the corporate finance field. The number of types of jobs available are simply too many. In comparison, it is far easier to speak about salary expectations for investment bankers. Recent studies suggest that investment bankers have much greater earnings than those of corporate finance professionals. Investment banking analysts are also entitled to high performance based bonuses.
