5 Online Myths You Shouldn’t Believe
Online programs are a far cry from any of the traditional learning environment you’re used to; there are no whiteboards, desks, or other things you’ve grown accustomed to. But they have definitely becoming a popular choice among students who cannot afford regular college. Surprisingly, students taking up online learning often quit their course midway, only to realize that the things they heard about the platform weren’t really true. If you are about to take up online learning, here are 5 things you shouldn’t believe:
• Online learning isn’t easy:
This myth is probably propagated by students who confuse flexibility and convenience with easy. True that they allow you to learn things at your own pace and space, but they’re definitely not easy. You have to put in a minimum of 10 – 12 hours every week reading, researching, or completing assignments. There’s not much of a difference between the tuition fee for online and on-campus courses. When students spend thousands of dollars to earn their degree, it only makes sense for universities to make the course just as challenging as a regular college ...
... course.
• Online learning can be a lonely journey:
Lectures aren’t conducted the normal way with professors physically present in the class teaching the subject matter. But online instructors engage students as much as a traditional professor would. The instructor’s job is to explain the topic and answer questions posed by students through group chats and emails. Of course, the actual responsibility for learning lies with the student, irrespective of the fact that the course is online or not.
• Online courses aren’t valued:
This may have been true of diploma mills offering worthless credentials. Almost every reputed university including Harvard and Stanford are now offering online courses. With so many established universities offering an online course, it only makes sense for employees to recognize and value online degrees. Besides, online colleges stimulate technologies commonly used in the real world. They also encourage skills like time management, collaboration, etc.
• Taking up online courses requires technical expertise:
True, online students are expected to know how to navigate the web and manage basic tasks like using a word processor, initiating a virtual chat, etc. But these aren’t difficult and as easy as navigating social media.
• There’s very little or no help for online students:
You can always seek help from instructors, or fellow students through chat forums. And if you need help with an assignment, hire a tutor! Can I pay someone to take my online class? Yes, you can. All you have to do is to ask, can you do my homework.
