All About Vent Free Logs

There are all different kinds of fireplaces available for use in your home, and it can often be difficult to decide between all of the different choices. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, so it comes down to preference a good majority of the time. Some people don’t even realize how different some of the fireplaces can be, for example the difference between vented and vent free gas logs. Here’s what it means if your gas logs are vent free.

How Are Vent Free Different?

A vent free log has been designed to burn the gas more cleanly than vented logs, producing little to no exhaust. This is similar to a gas range in your kitchen. This allows you to close the damper when burning the logs in the fireplace. You may prefer this on cold nights because most of the heat produced stays in the room. It also causes less pollution and less gas consumption. The combination of increased heat retention and decreased gas usage makes vent free more efficient than vented logs.

In the event of a power outage, vent free logs may even be a bit of a lifesaver, as you can set up the fireplace for efficient backup heat while you wait for your power to return. This can be useful if you live in colder regions that are more prone to outages in the winter time, such as the northern states. However, there are some things to keep in mind when burning them.

Things to Keep in Mind

When burning your gas logs vent free, be careful not to burn them for extended periods of time with the windows closed. This is because they introduce carbon dioxide into the room, so too much time without airing out the room will deplete the oxygen entirely. To combat this concern, these units are equipped with oxygen depletion sensors to detect when the oxygen in the room is at a dangerously low level. Be sure to occasionally crack a window to let some fresh air in when you are burning these logs. This will also prevent moisture from building up in your home, which would cause mold and mildew if it got out of control. However, some homes may actually benefit from the moisture in the winter when the air may be drier.

Be sure to get help with installation if you plan to install vent free logs, as it requires proper testing on the gas pressure as well as meeting certain building codes and specifications. This is not a job that you want to do yourself, as there can be safety hazards if something goes wrong. You should be able to find a professional to come install your fireplace for you at any location that sells these types of logs.

If you are interested in a fireplace that keeps your home warmer in the winter without using too many resources, it is time to look into gas logs that are vent free. Shop around for the best deals and find someone to come install your fireplace today so that you are ready when winter rolls around.
