The Subaru BRZ experienced resounding success upon its introduction two years ago. As the only two wheel drive dedicated sports cars in the Subaru stable, it attracts a lot of attention. Somehow, the Subaru engineers have managed to make a two wheel drive vehicle perform like an all wheel drive performance car. Naturally, speculation has been rife regarding a next generation of this sports car, and details are scant. Subaru new cars usually get a lot of publicity, here is what we know now and some speculation.

The State of the BRZ Right Now:

The Subaru BRZ is now two years into its lifecycle; initial sales were strong, but they are beginning to falter. The initial interest in the BRZ will be perked up with the forthcoming mid lifecycle update. New features and styling will be added along with a promotional push. This will boost sales, but the car industry always has to move forward to maintain customer interest. The sales in 2016 stand at 246 units sold up until the end of August, which is a drop of 43.8%. Is a New BRZ Model Viable?

Initial sales were strong, and now they have trailed off significantly. This may change after the update, but sales alone are not the only consideration. One important consideration is the new Subaru global platform that has been designed to reduce production costs and facilitate improvements. The BRZ uses this platform, many of the decisions that Subaru makes will be determined by this in the future. Although sales have been lower than Subaru would have liked, there is no doubt that the car has been good for the brand. This is because the BRZ is positioned at a price point lower than the WRX and it is a genuine sports car. Part of the recent Subaru strategy has been to bring new young drivers into the fold. An exciting sports car that is cheaper to buy than a WRX is good business sense, and it will yield results for years to come in further sales. Research has shown that young drivers with positive experiences will become dedicated buyers and be very loyal to their chosen brand.

Could We See a Special Edition?

It would seem to make sense to release a special edition of the BRZ to increase sales. In fact, this has already happened in Japan with the BRZ tS enhanced by STI. The Director of Subaru Australia Nick Senior has said that this would be unlikely in Australia. In part, this is because the launch of the BRZ saw the release of the dedicated sports pack. This pack contained virtually all of the enhancements that feature on the BRZ tS, and Subaru doesn't want to repeat themselves.
