The Utility of Copper

Copper is one of the oldest metals known to man. It was easily mined by the earliest settlers and prized for being uniquely malleable and ductile- it could be hammered into sheets and drawn into wires just like gold, except that it was less expensive. Copper remains one of the world’s premier industrial commodities with use in electronics and in electric cabling because of its high electrical conductivity. So much so that the metal is called “Dr. Copper” since the trends in its price influence the direction of the global economy. One of the forgotten uses of copper was its predominant use in households all over the world for piping, vessels and sanitary implements. Copper usage in homes has been eclipsed by plastics, stainless steel and other alloys in recent years. However, it has become popular again among fans of simple design, especially in sinks and bath items.

Why use Copper in Sinks?

Copper used to be the metal of choice for household objects because it would retain its shape and be resistant to rust. It was also much preferred for piping because it was very resistant to heat and steam with a high melting point. The metal was also found to have antibiotic properties by researchers. Colonies of bacteria on the copper metal would die in a matter of hours. The metal also has a lower density so items made from copper would not be as heavy as items made from iron of the same size. Copper sinks became popular because they could be easily carried around by settlers and travelling groups with minimal damage. These sinks could also be worked on by hand-hammering unlike iron and steel, so craftsmen could fashion copper sinks with minimal use of the furnace even in remote parts of the country. Copper sinks lost out to ceramic and steel sinks because of the tendency to gain a dull patina after a few months of use. However, these sinks are finding new fans for their ruggedness and simple design.

Types of Copper Sinks

Copper sinks come in a variety of shapes. The classic copper sinks are circular with different designs like swirls, dimples and tortoise shell. The design can be created by machine and by hand hammering, which is prized by collectors. Other popular designs are the Apron Front sink which can be mounted on a counter top and sleigh vessel sink which has an oval appearance. Leaf and fish shaped sinks are also popular. The sinks can be ordered in fresh copper finish and in ready-made patina in turquoise or black shades. Buyers should pay special attention to the gauge of copper sheet used- as a thicker sheet will last longer. While thick sinks will be more expensive initially, they tend to last much longer.

Maintenance of Copper Sinks

Copper sinks can be cleaned once a week with warm water and mild soap to maintain cleanliness and dislodge accumulated dirt. Fresh copper finish can be retained by adding a layer of copper wax to the dry metal and buffing the sink vigorously with a dry cloth.
