MD or Muscular Dystrophy is the name given to a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness of the muscles and results in loss of muscular mass. Genetic mutations are the cause of the disease, which interfere with the production of certain proteins that are essential for the body to have healthy muscles.

Symptoms

Progressive muscle weakness is the main symptom of muscular dystrophy. The disease has varying symptoms, according to the type of it. Different muscle groups of the patients may get affected, and the severity of the symptoms may also vary according to the type of the disease.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy:

This type of MD affects more than half of the total number of MD-affected individuals. A spontaneous mutation is the cause of the disease, and the signs start to appear between 2 to 3 years of birth.

These include:

1. Frequent falls

2. Problems associated with running and jumping

3. The difficulty to get up from a sitting or lying position

4. A waddling gait

5. Larger than normal calf muscles

6. Stiffness and pain within muscles

7. Toe walking

8. Disabilities associated with learning

Becker Muscular Dystrophy:

The symptoms of this MD type are same as that of the Duchenne MD, but the signs are milder, and the disease also progresses slowly comparatively.

Myotonic, Facioscapulohumeral, Congenital and Limb Girdle are some other kinds of MD.

Cause

A muscular protein, by the name Dystrophin, imparts the muscle the shock absorbing capability. A genetic mutation causes the stoppage of production of this protein in MD-affected individuals. Muscles get weak and deteriorate with age.

Stem Cell Therapy

If the muscle fibre membranes are restored with the protein Dystrophin, the regenerative and the regenerative cycles can be broken. Stem cell treatment for Muscular Dystrophy can restore the protein, and can provide for the treatment of MD.

Stem cells have certain unique properties that contribute towards the repair and regeneration of the damaged muscle cells. As the cells are at an early stage of development, they can differentiate to form any kind of cell of the body, including the muscular cells.

Stem cells can also differentiate to form the satellite cells that play an important role in the regeneration of the skeletal muscles. Stem cell therapy can replenish the depleting stem cell pool of the body, and can also provide it with the required proteins so that it can assume normal muscular activities.

Stem cells have therapeutic mechanisms, including:

1. Secretion of the growth stimulating cytokines

2. Cellular fusions and differentiation

3. Better oxygen supply and Vascularization of the damaged body areas

Hence, transplantation of the cells in those affected by MD provides for a reduction in inflammation, remodeling of tissues, prevention of cell death, and formation of new and healthy muscle cells.

Post stem cell therapy (offered at premier healthcare institutions, including NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute (NGBSI), Mumbai, which also offers stem cell treatment for Autism, those who are affected by MD show improvements, including greater strength in the muscles of the trunk and enhanced strength in the limbs. Patients show improvements in areas like better ambulation, better stamina, greater movements of the hand, increase trunk balance, and other improvements. The patients are able to live a more independent life post stem cell therapy.
