17 million children suffer from the Neurodegenerative disorder Cerebral Palsy (CP) worldwide. While CP cannot be cured completely, there are a number of therapies that can reduce the severity of medical problems that a CP affected child suffers from. Cerebral Palsy is treated through a number of therapies; Stem cell therapy is also one of these measures to treat this condition.

Speech Therapy:

CP affects speech adversely. The aim of speech therapy is to evaluate a child’s ability to understand and to speak. Sometimes, such therapy can prevent the need for surgery. Apart from addressing the speech issues, the therapy also treats the eating issues.

The dietitian advice is another method of Cerebral Palsy treatment in India. The advice has its focus on the nutrition. The diet plan ensures the right kind of food that aid the weight gain and growth of the child.

Yoga and Massage Therapy:

Yoga and Massage Therapy can relax the tense muscles of the child. The therapies also strengthen the muscles and improve joint flexibility.

Medical Equipment and Devices:

The CP affected child may suffer from joint-related problems and spastic or over reactive muscles. Devices used in this treatment help in supporting movements and also his/her daily life activities. These devices include casts, orthotics, crutches, special sets, standers, special shoes and wheelchairs among others.

Occupational Therapy:

This therapy makes the child more independent. The child can resume to activities like eating and dressing with ease, post therapy.

Behavioral Therapy:

This therapy helps in behavioral improvements in children suffering from cerebral palsy. Children learn more ways for communicating with their peers and others.

Stem Cell Therapy:

CP occurs because of the damage to the brain cells. Ischemia (inadequate blood supply to the brain) and Hypoxia (reduction of oxygen flow to the brain) cause damage to the brain cells and tissues, causing CP. Stem cell therapy helps reversal of this damage.

As Neuroplasticity, or the ability of the brain cells to form neural pathways, is highest at infancy hence the transplantation of stem cells in CP children has better results. Cells at this stage can easily integrate with the Brain and repair the damaged cells.

Stem cells also help regenerate neural tissues. Stem cells enhance axonal sprouting and secrete a number of neurotrophic factors that are helpful for growth of connective tissues, cell proliferation, and cytoprotection. As stem cells can divide and differentiate to form new brain cells like oligodendrocytes, they help in remyelination of the existing neurons (important for proper nervous system activity). New pathways for transmittance of neural signals are created this way. The cells also create a more favorable cellular environment by providing the missing enzymes to it. The cells secrete a number of growth factors like fibroblast growth factor, and the endothelial growth factors amongst others help in neo-angiogenesis or development of new blood vessels. This leads to sufficient blood supply to the affected areas of the Brain. The increase in blood flow also helps to recover lost tissue functions.

Of all the therapies for CP, stem cell therapy comes closest to treating the root cause of the disease. NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute (NGBSI) offers molecular or stem cell therapy for CP. It also provides stem cell therapy for autism in India and treats other neurological disorders like Dementia, Parkinson, and Spinal Cord Injury as well.
