Copper sinks are widely popular in modern homes. They blend in well with contemporary and rustic styles alike, and lend a unique charm to dwelling spaces. They are manufactured for use in kitchens, bar and prep areas, as well as for use in bathrooms. The metal is bio degradable in nature and has anti-bacterial properties making it apt for use in such locations. They require minimal maintenance and are easy to clean. Their ever changing patina lends a natural, living appearance, making copper sinks a truly unique addition to homes.

When buying copper sinks, different characteristics need to be evaluated. 5 important ones are listed below.

# 1 - Purity

A good quality sink consists of 99% copper with 1% zinc added for strength and durability. At times, lead is used a substitute to zinc, when making the alloy. It adds similar workability properties to the metal, and is cheaper than zinc. However, the use of this metal is harmful to health, and often gives rise to serious side effects and long term illnesses. When buying copper sinks, always ensure to have get a check done on the materials used.

# 2 - Gauge

Gauge refers to the thickness of the metal used. Copper sinks are available in a wide range of thicknesses. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the metal is. Being a soft metal, the gauge has an important role to play in the life and durability of this material. Bathroom and vanity sinks are best made from 20 gauge to 16 gauge. Kitchen, bar, and prep sinks work better when made from 18 gauge to 14 gauge copper. This is because sinks used in these locations need to be strong enough to bear a constant barrage of utensils and cleaning products.

# 3 - Mounting Style

Copper sinks come in different mounting styles for kitchens and bathrooms. Kitchen sinks are available in standard and farmhouse styles. The former can be installed in either an under counter mount or a drop-in mount. The latter, also referred to as apron front sinks, come in different configurations like single well, double well and even triple well versions.

Sinks used in bathrooms are available in three styles - vessel, drop-in, and under counter mount. The vessel sink is placed over the counter top. Drop – in and under counter mount are similar and differ only in their detailing applied to the rim or lip area. The former may have a border of decorative detailing, while an under counter mount is usually flat.

# 4 - Surface finish

Copper sinks are generally available in two finishes – smooth and hammered. The smooth finish lends a modernist appearance is more appropriate for homes with contemporary styling. Additionally, smooth sinks reveal fingerprints, stains, and scratch marks more visibly than hammered ones. For this reason, those with smooth finish are better used in bathrooms. Hammered sinks, on the other hand are more suited for kitchens and bars as they are also stronger and can take the wear and tear from continuous use and heavy vessels.

# 5 - Patina

Copper has a natural and living patina, and hence changes color from time to time. What begins as the bright red of shiny new copper, slowly changes into caramel and darker hues of brown or chocolate. Darker patinas can also be created artificially using chemicals. However these are harmful in nature. A better and safer method involves exposing copper to heat and safe reactive agents. Coating the sink with protective wax or finishes retains the patina, and serves best for people who like a particular shade of copper.

Coppers sinks are an asset in modern homes. By evaluating the above mentioned features, you can easily select the best and the most suited ones for your home.
