Stem cell therapy is now the best measure for treating Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). The unique properties possessed by stem cells help in neural regulation, remyelination, and neuroprotection. When combined with the rehabilitation program, the benefits increase manifold. Only a handful of healthcare institutions in the whole world employs the unique and intelligent way of treating SCI through multiple ways. NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, (NGSBI), located at Mumbai (India), is one of the few institutions to offer both stem cell therapy and rehabilitation program to SCI patients.

Spinal Cord Injury

The spinal cord can be damaged through both traumatic and non-traumatic causes. Falls, sports and occupational injuries, traffic injuries, and violence are the traumatic causes of the disease. Non-traumatic causes of the disease are a tumor, infectious disease, osteoarthritis and other muscular skeletal diseases and certain congenital problems.

How patients get benefitted by stem cell treatment for Spinal Cord Injury Stem cells, found in all mammals, possess major therapeutic capabilities.

Stem cell treatment for spinal cord injury brings in multiple benefits.

1. Stem cells can differentiate to form multiple cell types (including cells of the nervous system). They can also divide endlessly to produce any number of cells. As the stem cells differentiate to form new and specialized cells like astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, neurons and motor neurons, they can be transplanted into the body of the SCI affected patient to replenish the cell pool. Stem cells also secrete the growth factors and the cytokines that are Neuro-protective in nature and provide for Neuroregeneration.

2. Stem cells also possess anti-inflammatory effects. Hence, administration and transplantation of stem cells reduce the reactive and inflammatory state of astrocytes and microglia and promotes a Neuroprotective environment. The autologous cells do not suffer from rejection issues and are easily accepted by the body’s immune system.

3. Stem cells promote regeneration of axons by reconstituting the lesion site “bridge” that is capable of supporting the axonal attachments. Stem cells secrete the growth factors that can attract the injured axons.

4. Stem cells are also beneficial for improving spinal muscle atrophy, which is characterized by atrophy and paralysis. Stem cells improve the spinal health by providing the motor-neuron progenitors. Stem cells provide for better neuronal survival rates and also offer functional recovery benefits.

Stem cells are transplanted into the body of patients through systemic delivery methods. These include the intrathecal (administration of the stem cells into the brain or the spinal cord) or intravascular methods. Once transplanted, the stem cells migrate to the affected and injured parts of the spine. The autologous bone marrow-derived CD34 cells are transplanted through the intrathecal infusion route. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) shows that the transplanted cell migrates to the affected areas.

Stem cells are promising for the regeneration of spinal cords. Positive strides in the area will improve the stem cells so that they could be used for other neurological diseases as well.

Various Therapies Included in the Rehabilitation Program

While the stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury addresses the root cause of SCI and improves brain and neural health in multiple ways, the rehabilitation program provides for an improvement in physical and cognitive health. The different therapies provided under the rehabilitation program at NBGSI include therapies like Speech therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dance and Music Therapy, Yoga Therapy, Aquatic Therapy, Psychological Counseling etc. Together, the therapies provide different kinds of skills to the SCI patients. Post rehabilitation, the patient shows improvement in areas like speech, physical movements, coordination, motor skills and other areas.
