When one is planning to start a new business, the first and most important thing to decide upon is the Logo of the company. It should be designed in such a way that it should look simple yet memorable and timeless. 80% of the people believe that color increases brand recognition as the human mind are highly responsive to visual stimuli and color is one of the major defining factors in that response. Apart from all the other typography choices, colors are important as they convey meaning at both conscious and subconscious level. A logo can consist of various colors that convey your brand or be simply black and white. The main thing is that it should be completely unique and also a great marketing strategic tool for the brand. It is very important for graphic designers to harness the power of color psychology to make their designs attractive and appealing.
How to Choose Logo Colors
There is a simple 3-step process to have an insight on how to choose logo colors:-
1. Determine the Brand Personality
It is a must that the colors chosen should reflect the expectations of the customers and what the entrepreneur is envisioning.
2. Color Psychology
We all know that colors have the most impact on the human mind and so we should have a sound knowledge of color psychology so that they can influence their customers.
3. Check out your Competitors
It is very important to know and evaluate what color palette are your competitors using and then decide that whether you should stay on with the trend or deviate and try something new. While some would like to take risks and be innovative, others would just play safe and move on with the existing trend. The choice is yours.
What Colors to choose for your Logo
A designer should be careful in choosing the right colors as different colors have different implications for logo design and they should be carefully used to enhance specific elements of the logo and bring nuance to your message by using different shades and tones. Generally, bright and bold colors grab more attention but can appear brash, while for a more sophisticated image, muted tones are used but they are under the risk of being overlooked. To know more about the different implications that specific colors have, read below:-
Red is mostly used by restaurants and food product industries like Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Lays, Heinz, Kellogg's, KFC and much more as it is found to stimulate appetite. Also, it can make you feel more dynamic, passionate, energetic, aggressive and warm. This is the reason why Toyota, YouTube, CNN etc use red for their logos. Red also implies danger and heat.
This is considered as the color of innovation and modern thinking while carrying connotations of youth, fun, affordability, and approachability. Companies like Fanta, Crush, Harley Davidson, Amazon, Hooters, Nickelodeon etc, use orange in their logos.
This color should be used cautiously as it has some negative connotations as well and is used in warning signs and signifies cowardice. The positive aspect is that yellow is sunny, warm and friendly and it is also used to stimulate appetite. Nikon, National Geographic, Hertz, DHL etc. are using yellow for their logos.
To emphasize the natural and ethical credentials of a company, green should be preferred especially with organic and vegetarian foods. It also ascribes to growth, freshness, and growing finances. Whole Foods, Tropicana, Animal Planet, Microsoft Excel, etc are using green for their logos.
Corporates mostly prefer to have blue colored logos as it implies professionalism, serious-mindedness, sincerity, integrity, and calm. It is also associated with authority and success, making it commonly used with government and financial institutions. Facebook, Dell, Microsoft Word, Skype, Walmart, Ford, JP Morgan, Dell, GE, etc. are using blue logos.
For long, purple has been associated with the church and implies wisdom and dignity and historically a color of wealth and riches as it signifies royalty and luxury. Successful companies that are using purple for their logos are Yahoo, SyFy, TMobile, Hallmark, Wonka and much more.
On one hand black implies power and sophistication and on the other hand, it is connected with villainy and death. It is very mundane, that for using logos in media where color is not available, we have no option other than using black and white, but thankfully there is a current trend for bold monochrome logos and wordmarks. Apple, Adidas, HP, WWF, BMW, BBC are using black colored logos.
Generally associated with purity, cleanliness, and simplicity, white logos stand out in a colored field. Many companies prefer to have both, a white version and a colored version of their logo like Coca-Cola wordmark is white on red tins and red on white bottles. Puma, Crocs, Ministry of Sound, etc. have white colored logos.
• Multiple Colors
Multiple colors can be difficult to pull off but can work well if you want to offer a wide choice of products and services like with Google, Windows, and eBay. Use of various colors in the Olympic ring implies diversity and inclusiveness.
An emerging trend in logo design is the use of mosaic patterns and tessellation, which requires the use of several colors.
The above-mentioned associations are not rigid rules but are definitely useful in making your color choices as it is the color of the logo that is going to impact your viewers the most.
