As you take some time off over the summer – to stop to smell the roses, as they say – you'll most likely notice stunning plants and flowers blooming all around you. While you're no doubt in awe of their beauty (we certainly are), you may not realize that these botanicals are so much more than beautiful. In fact, many of these plants are filled with abundant healing, moisturizing and anti-aging properties.

Here is a shortlist of our favorite natural ingredients and how they can bring a boost to your skincare routine. Some of them may surprise you. Consider them Mother Nature's gift to your skin.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Extract (Aloe Vera)
Aloe Vera, also known as the wonder plant, is mostly used for its healing, anti-inflammatory, and calming properties. Aloe Vera is used to treat wounds, sunburns, and acne because it allows for fast healing while doing a good job at preventing the skin from scarring. Not only that, but it's also rich in antioxidants making this plant an excellent moisturizer and anti-aging promoter. And, did you know that drinking Aloe Vera juice before going to bed helps you relax and get some good sleep? It's a fact.

Olea Europaea Fruit Oil (Olive Oil)
There have been numerous articles and news reports on the magic of olive oil. So much so, that you can count on finding several products containing olive oil when browsing through the skincare shelves at any store. In this particular case, the hype is real – olive oil is extremely beneficial. Rich in antioxidants like vitamins A + E, olive oil helps your skin repair signs of premature aging, mostly caused by sun damage, by speeding up the regeneration of new skin cells. Olive oil is also a great source of hydration, leaving the skin firm and smooth.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil)
Almonds are not only a delicious snack, but are a wonderful treatment for your skin. Sweet almond oil is rich in vitamins A, B and E, also known as the trio of antioxidants needed to protect skin from damage and retain its natural glow. Almond oil is a great natural treatment for people with dry skin. With its heavier consistency and richness in moisture, sweet almond oil removes the appearance of dryness more quickly than many other ingredients. Bonus: Almond oil is a highly effective solution for dark circles under the eyes. Simply apply some oil around your eyes and let it work on the skin while you're getting your beauty sleep.

Lonicera Japonica Flower (Honeysuckle)
Honeysuckle is derived from the Lonicera family. This blossom is primary used for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and calming properties working its magic on acne and sunburns. Besides doing a superior job on your skin, honeysuckle oil extract and its sweet smell relieves physical stress, making it to a pleasant oil to use for aromatherapy. Did you know that honeysuckle also acts as a natural preservative in skincare products?

Salvia Officinalis Leaf Extract (Sage)
Sage, a perennial evergreen plant, is a member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family. This herb is rich in chemical compounds, essential oils, and vitamins, making sage a truly beneficial friend to our skin. With its rich antioxidant content, sage helps reduce the appearance of environmental aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, while preventing the skin from free radical damage and future aging. P.S. For people with oily skin, sage is a botanical to remember. Why? Because sage oil regulates sebum production in oily complexions, sage is a great skin toner.

Citrus Medica Limonum Peel Extract (Lemon Peel)
Are you one of those people who throw the lemon peels away after making yourself some lemonade? Stop doing that (now) and start using the lemon peel on your skin. Why? Lemon peel contains refreshing essential oils that cleanse, remove dead skin cells, and brighten the skin. And lemon peel also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent and control acne.

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract (Marigold)
Calendula, known as Marigold, is an herb packed with anti-inflammatory benefits, helping the skin to combat acne and other inflammatory skin conditions. With its ability to stimulate regeneration of the skin's own protein, collagen, calendula also does a good job at minimizing scarring, making this herb the optimal natural healing agent for our skin. Bonus: Calendula oil boosts the skin's hydration, helping to maintain that youthful glow.

Tynus Vulgaris Leaf Extract (Thyme)
Thyme is not only extremely popular in the culinary world because of its wonderful flavor, but in the skincare world because of its positive results. With exceptional effects on propionibacterim – the bacterium that causes breakouts on our skin – thyme is one of the most effective treatments of acne. But the benefits don't stop there. Thyme is also a great source of antioxidants, preventing the skin from free radical damage and premature aging.

Longa Root Extract (Turmeric)
Turmeric is a spice belonging to the ginger family that is found in the roots of the curcuma longa plant. Known as the golden spice of life, turmeric cleanses and provides nourishment to your skin, helping it maintain its elasticity and radiance. Not only that, this spice is also a superior source of anti-inflammatory properties, making it a true fighter for not only glowing skin, but good overall health.
