Will your career path lead to being an electrician?
A common and easy way of becoming an electrician is through an apprenticeship. As there is such a skills shortage at the moment, there are many vacancies up and down the country in order to help fill this gap. While this is bad news for the economy that we have such a shortage, it’s good news for you if you’re willing to work hard, as many electricians are earning up to £2000 per week!

What can you expect when you first start out?
The starting salary is around £19000 - £22000 for a 37 hour week, but there’s plenty of availability for overtime, so your earnings could skyrocket as soon as you finish your apprenticeship, or university degree.

Electricians work in many different sectors, from homes, to schools, to businesses, to warehouses. You also need an electrician’s qualification to work with renewable technology, such as solar panels.

As such, you may work shifts or be on emergency callout. You’ll also get to see different parts of the country, as any one job could take you miles away from home. Due to this, a driving licence is pretty much essential.

You might often find yourself working in cramped spaces to find cabling, or on top of scaffolding at constructions sites.

The role involves the inspection, installation and testing of equipment, then to find and fix faults. So it’s very much a case of problem solving. If you have a natural aptitude for doing that, then this is definitely a career to consider.

Types of Electrician
Electricians have different roles, and they fall into the following categories;
Installation – of lighting, power systems, fire protection and data networks
Maintenance – regular safety check-ups to ensure systems are working properly and efficiently
Machine Repair – working with and maintaining transformers and electrical motors
Highway Systems – the installation and maintenance of street lights and traffic systems, whether it be traffic lights or electronic motorway notifications of delays, accidents etc.

The Future
Once you have fully completed your training and obtained the required qualifications, and have a good amount of experience behind you, doors to other roles such as design engineering, site management or even consultancy will open.

At Sunny Electricals, we supply electricians across the UK with hundreds of electrical items, available from stock. We turnaround your order on the same day if orders are placed before 3pm. Take a look at our website – www.sunnyelectricals.com, or call 01922 644822.
