2013 Anti Hindu Riots – A Fresh Chapter In Hindu Domination In Bangladesh

Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 the country has seen quite some episodes of Hindu suppression by the Muslim majorities. While the news of these Hindu suppression were censored vigorously before being made public, the victims were not presented in front of the press or they never appeared on any news reports, except for the occasional seepage and leakage of news through various sources.

The latest in a series of attack was the attack on the Hindus all over Bangladesh by the Islamic extremists, which were supported by none other than the Jamat and the BNP or Bangladesh National Party. The riot was triggered by the decision by the Supreme Court judge to hang Delwar Hussain, a BNP activist. The decision instigated a series of violent attacks against the government establishments as well as on the minorities. This resulted in a widespread riot and destruction of the Hindu properties and lives. A number of temples and Hindu establishments were destroyed. Though the attacks were heavily criticized the US and the Indian Governments, the Bangladeshi Government is still criticized for not being so pro-active in curbing the riot, looting and arson. Even the authorities looking after the human rights of minority in Bangladesh as well as different intellectual forums and organizations had criticized the steps taken by the government at that time.

The Jihadi groups, which were responsible for these rioting and arson, were all funded by Langley as well the three most notorious anti Hindu groups called Hefazate Islam, Jamaati Islami and last but not the least, the BNP. All these groups have been funding the extremist groups and this was revealed by one of the most experienced Pakistani journalists, who was worked in Bangladesh for the Internal Herald Tribune.

Rioting took place in all over Bangladesh. In the Noakhali district, a number of Hindu properties, like homes and shops and business establishment and temples were destroyed and torched, and a number of Hindus were killed and women assaulted and brutally murdered by the extremists led by the Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The news of arson and looting and vandalism were reported from Khulna Division, Rangpur Division, Barisal Division, Rajshahi Division, Dhaka Division, Sylhet Division. Though the leaders of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad protested in several ways against these barbaric acts and they were ably backed by the intellectuals of the country, the government reaction was lukewarm, in spite of the fact that there were early warnings of the rioting much in advance.

This is where the conditions of the hapless Hindus differ from the Muslim minorities in India who have the right to raise voice in the same way, or perhaps in a stronger way in some cases, than the Hindu majority. Though a lot of things are said and done in Bangladesh in support of the minorities there, the lethargic attitude of the government shows the nature of their attitude towards the Hindu itself describes the Hindus condition in Bangladesh and underlines their appalling state of affairs.
