We all love eating chocolates. Some people crave so much for a chocolate that they love eating it every single day. We have chocolates like liquor filled chocolate which are made up of Ghiraldelli syrup. There are many other different kinds of chocolates which are available in stores. But have you ever thought that how exactly these delicious things which literally melt in the mouth were made?
Here is the complete history of chocolates –
1. The Mayans of Central America are known to be the first ones on this planet who discovered cocoa, the basic ingredient used for making any kind of chocolate. They came to know that the beans inside the cocoa can be used for making a liquid which would be positioned as a Mayan treasured treat.
2. The word chocolate has been derived from the Mayan word xocolati which literally means bitter water. The chocolate which was discovered by the Mayans is said to be totally different than the one which we eat today. It was made after crushing cocoa beans and mixing chili peppers and water. They used to transfer the liquid from one cup to another until a frothy thing appeared on the top of the chocolate.
3. We might just call it bitter water in layman language. But it was considered to be something really precious and was regarded as the food of the gods. Cocoa became so sacred that its images were carved on the walls so that people can literally pray to that liquid. This is the reason why Mayans are shown to drink chocolate in a lot of sculptures.
4. Cocoa was started getting used in religious ceremonies and marriage celebrations as it was considered to be the food of the gods. All the Mayans were given the privilege of enjoying the taste of cocoa irrespective of their caste.
5. Cocoa got the status of a highly frothy drink which was valued for its medicinal and healing properties. That is why there were shops in every corner selling the cocoa drink to help those who were suffering from diseases.
6. Due to its high level of medicinal importance, cocoa became popular in the whole world and its demand started increasing. It soon became a commodity of export and played a major role in shaping the economy during the Mayan period.
This was all about the history of cocoa and how it came to be known as chocolate in the later periods. We all know that there is a history associated with everything. The same is the case with chocolate.
