Chocolate’s Sweet History

As you indulge in the richness of this food, it is good to know some historical facts about it. You would be surprised to know that an annual amount of $75 Billion is spend on chocolates worldwide. Read on to know more about the rich history.
The history of this “food of the gods” goes as back as 1900 B.C. It was only consumed as a bitter beverage initially and it was only the rich and wealthy that benefitted the goodness of cacao. We now can avail it anytime and easily with so many options to choose from.
Many civilizations as Olmec, Aztec and Mayans believed it to possess some mystic qualities because of the effect it has on them. The Mayans even worshipped and would offer their rulers, priests and all the noble people with chocolates at sacred ceremonies. And later the Aztec traded with them which they used as currency.
It was in the 1500s, when Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes who returned from Mexico with chocolate. And Spaniards experimented with this bitter drink; they sweetened it with cane sugar and cinnamon to balance the bitterness. Unfortunately, it was only the elite that could afford and indulge in this luxurious drink.
Chocolate never gained popularity much; it was only after French King Louis XIII in 1615 after lover a daughter of a Spanish King brought with her the sweet secret. The Europeans loved it so much and started establishing colonial plantations in equatorial regions.
It was the Dutch chemist named Coenraad Johannes van Houten who invented cocoa press. This invention made way for the process of squeezing fatty cocoa butter from the roasted beans and using the fine powder to solidify into edible and easily digestible chocolate. And this is how it reached the confectionaries making it easily accessible to the masses.
J.S. Fry & Sons created the first bar of chocolate in the year 1847. Over the years different companies are trying to come up with inventive ideas to give it a superior taste and texture. So, with the competition the quality, textures and even the variations keep on growing in huge numbers.
Chocolates are great to indulge all throughout the year and hot chocolate sticks makes the ultimate companion on a warm winter evening. There are many brands that are dedicated to creating the finest like the Slitti, Vosges, Vivani, etc and they are a must try for every chocolate lover.
Although there is a stiff competition in the chocolate market, it is family owned brands like Cadbury, Hershey and Mars that gave the stimulus to the industry in the late 1800s.
