Boron nitride being the exceptionally chemical resistant refactoring compound of boron and nitrogen exists in various crystalline forms. The empirical formula BN corresponds to the cubic and hexagonal structure of carbon in the form of graphite and diamond respectively. The boron cubes are too hard for a diamond to scratch it and because of its chemical inertness, hardness and temperature as high as 2973 degree C, it is used as a water resistant coating and abrasive.

It melts under the pressure of 3000 degree C. Interlocking hexagonal rings are formed by nitrogen and boron atoms each hexagonal ring having 3 atoms of nitrogen and 3 of boron that lengths upto 0.145 nm and is not an alternate single double bond system.
The B-N-B or N-B-N bond angle is 120o as evident in graphite and is a perfect hexagonal ring bond. Like graphite or graphene layers, it has a 2D planar giant covalent network. Even the distance is similar like the inter-layer gap in graphite.It is not an electron deficient compound like semi conductors. Plastics filled with hexagonal boron nitride are seen to decrease the thermal expansion with an increased electrical insulation thermal conductivity, increased thermal conductivity and cause reduced wear to adjacent parts.
They stay stable in the air to ~1000oC while the materials based on carbon and graphite would have ignited for a longer period of time. Even the boron nanotubes are used for the sleeving of wire. Also used as catalyst support BN is also used as a lubricant. The soft and slippery nature makes it effective enough to be used in cosmetics.
