All words serve a purpose. Man has always chosen words to truly express his emotions as candidly as possible. Emotions such as anguish, love, happiness, pain, joy, sadness these can only be felt individually by every person.

As a person writes what he feels his individual emotions come to light. Rare books during the 1800s and before have shown an abundance of authors who expressed what they felt, the raw and primal emotions in the most beautiful way they could. These books have helped remind us of what truly literature was at that time.

In this modern era, language has become malleable and has been contorted to suit the needs of the people and not what the author was truly trying to say. Rare books, with their free expression and their honesty to the language at that time are coveted items when it comes to any bibliophile. For example a rare first edition Keats or a John Milton which are extremely rare may cost as much as a house, and there are buyers for them. Collecting them is a kind of an art.

A lot of collectors have their own private libraries where they can proudly display their books. And a lot of people are more than keen to see what past authors had to say in their own language, and not that which has been adulterated over time to suit the needs of the people better.

Categories of Selection and Prices

The books we are talking about probably must date back as far as the 18th century. These books have been handled, transported, not to mention the paper that was used then was prone to get brown and crumble, or even pests may have taken up residence in the spines of hardbound books.
The value and price of the book ultimately rest on the current condition of it. A lot of prominent auction houses and sellers check the book thoroughly and have a team of experts with them in case restoration is required to ensure the books are in a fine condition before selling.

Selection also depends on the authenticity and the period during which it was written. Sometimes sellers are biased about a certain author so they prefer to not keep their books, while some prefer one particular author alone and would go to the ends of the earth to obtain rare copies or manuscripts by them before putting them up. A lot of sellers have also gone to the extent of selling them in an electronic format online.

Past Versions Versus Present

What is it then about these books that people are so attracted to them even though they have probably been translated or republished in a new format? The fact remains that over the years as aforementioned the language does not remain the same. Nowadays these translated copies may be shoddy and the real meaning of those words maybe lost.

The true meaning of them is best expressed in the form they were originally written. The words are changed to make it easier to understand for the people and a lot has been changed to conform to the mindset of current society to prevent any kind of opposition or condemnation due to the explicit nature of these books that my go against the ideals of an individual or any religious sentiments or a group. Hence finding a book that is rare is a treasure of knowledge to be reserved for posterity’s sake.

The author is a lecturer and an avid collector of books on literature and poetry. He has written about a lot of books and authors and critiqued them as well. To checkout rare books collection visit Osianama online.
