Painful dental visits are a thing of the past, but for some, the fear is overwhelming. Conquer the fear with the help of Sedation Dentistry Woodland Hills.

If the thought of visiting the dentist has you gritting your teeth in fear, you're not alone. For many people, the fear of dentists is so great that forgoing visits, even in the face of debilitating pain, seems like a good idea. In the face of such overwhelming anxiety, many dentists are now providing sedation or "sleep" dentistry to their patients.

There are four different levels of sedation that can be used, depending on the severity of the anxiety and the complication of the dental procedure that must be performed. The lowest level is "minimal". In this level, the patient is entirely awake but a light dosage of sedative ensures that the patient remains relaxed. The most typical sedative used to induce this state is nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas". This is also the most commonly induced level, as it is often used in conjunction with local anesthesia during longer operations with patients that are not typically anxious, in order to keep them compliant.

The second level is known as moderate, sometimes as "conscious". The most commonly used medicine to induce this state is Halcion, which is similar to Valium. Depending on the dosage, the patient may fall lightly asleep, though they can be easily awakened. Common side effects include grogginess, slurred speech, and memory loss.

The third level is deeper than the first two, and is imaginatively titled "deep". In this state, you are mostly unconscious but can still be awakened through normal means if necessary. Sometimes, the sedative is delivered Intravenously, allowing the dentist to precisely control the dose, increasing or decreasing it from moment to moment if necessary.

The fourth level is the deepest still, and is only used in extreme scenarios: General Anesthesia. More commonly administered in full hospitals, very involved dental surgery may necessitate general anesthesia. While under the effects of general anesthesia, it is not possible to be woken up. The effect of the drug must be allowed to wear off naturally, or are reversed with a stimulant medication after the operation is completed.

Speaking and consulting with a dentist beforehand is the best way to ensure that your dental needs are met, finding a negotiated balance between anxiety and medical necessity. Schedule a visit for Sedation Dentistry Woodland Hills today, and put your fear behind you.
