Several communities have time and again ruled over or dwelled in the continent of Asia and left their mark over its art and way of living on the whole. Art is nothing but the depiction of the cultures, traditions or on a broader scale the way of life of people. Asian art gives an insight into the rich cultural heritage of the continent.

With the establishment of a number of contemporary Asian art museums and the recognition gained by various Asian artists such as RirkritTiravanija from Thailand, Mariko Mori from Japan and the Chinese artist CaiGuo – Qiang the art of contemporary Asia has reached a whole new stature in the world of art and creativity.

Characteristics of contemporary Asian art

The sudden fame and success achieved by Asian artists has raised several questions in the minds of art enthusiasts, critics, students and art historians as well. For instance what can be defined as Asian contemporary art? What makes the art of Asia different from the art of any other region say New York or the Great Britain etc. and so on? Asia is a vast continent that spreads over roughly one – third of the entire land area of the earth. It is thus a Himalayan task to give an exhaustive study of the various art forms and styles ranging all across Asia.

The modern day Asian art never fails to command appreciation owing to its astounding diversities and excellent creativity. The terms experimental, diverse, overlapping cultures and non – traditional can best define the works of contemporary Asian artists. The contemporary artists of Asia diverged from the traditional methods and styles of painting and sculpture etc. and see the world with a fresh perspective which they present in their pieces of art. Video art, installation art, performance art and photography are a few forms of art which have gained popularity and are in great vogue in the contemporary era.

The modernist movement in the global art and culture arena has not exempted even the Asian artists. Today art is much broader a term in a sense that it does not only refer to paintings made in acrylic and oil. The modern artists in Asia preferred experimental media for producing art works rather than the conventional activities that were being overwhelmingly followed in their in a sense tradition – bound societies.

For contemporary Asian artists art is more about expression and abstractionism rather than just blankly painting an object or a scene as it is. Modern artists produce paintings and other art works that behold their own perspective towards the practices and events going on in the society.
