How Does Solvent Stripping And Recovery Work?

While people did not think twice about the wastes, liquid or otherwise, being dumped daily into the city sewage water, in the earlier times, it is high time that steps be taken to ensure that such poisonous substances do not find their way into the sea or ocean, largely affecting plan and animal life. The increasing environmental hazards due to the age-old ignorance has also compelled big industries into taking active steps to make sure that they minimize the harsh chemicals and other harmful particles present in the industrial wastes that ultimately end up in natural water bodies. In this context, solvent stripping and solvent recovery systems are hard at work nowadays in ensuring that harmful materials are stripped away from waste streams and also ensuring that rare and costly materials are recovered from the similar wastes before being discarded.
A Solvent Stripper is heavy machinery that uses either air stripping or steam stripping as common methods of tripping solvent from liquid based waste. While investing in such machinery was considered to be a waste of financial resources of a company at one time, the strict environmental laws implemented throughout the world have drove more and more industry to pick up the option of finely cleaning the liquid waste that leaves their plant to avoid expensive lawsuits in the future. Solvent strippers often have dual functionality as they serve as solvent recovery systems too. The two main mechanisms practiced by the solvent strippers are:
• Air stripping: In this mechanism, most of the materials which are either insoluble in water or highly volatile in water are stripped away rapidly. Solvent strippers which use this mechanism are commonly used by biological plants. The insoluble liquids present in the water are evaporated after which the water is considered dischargeable.
• Steam stripping: While air stripping might be the most preferred way of stripping solvent, it might not be the ideal of way of recovering solvents after they have been stripped. This defeats half of the entire purpose behind stripping a solvent. In air stripping, the solvent content in the effluent air decreases below the required point and as a result, the recovery of the solvent becomes very difficult. Steam stripping, on the other hand, though uses a much elaborate set up and hence is more expensive a process than air stripping, is much more effective when it comes to recapturing the solvents that have been stripped.
