Methods For Cleaning Diamond Earrings

Total Articles: 5

Whilst they’re always pretty and sparkly when we first put them on, diamond earrings will eventually become dirty through frequent wear. They will pick up oil from your skin and hair, causing the metal to become worn and the diamond to lose its luster. In this article, we have outlined some methods you can employ to clean your earrings and make them look as good as new.

▪ Removing Visible Dirt
If you have noticed visible clumps of dirt or fibres between the diamond and the backing or prongs, it can be removed with a toothpick. If fibres have gotten stuck in the setting, they can be removed with tweezers.

▪ Baking Soda
This can be used to remove tarnish from diamond earrings with silver backings or to polish those with gold backings. For silver, combine 1/4 cup baking soda with 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. Dip a damp sponge into the solution and carefully rub it onto the backing. For gold, sprinkle a light coating of baking soda onto the backing and pour some vinegar on. Rinse in clean water. Dry and polish with a lint-free cloth.

▪ Jewellery Cleaner
A specially designed jewellery cleaner can also be effective; they can be found at department and jewellery stores. Pour a small amount of the cleaner into a bowl, put the earrings in and leave them overnight. Rinse them in warm water, dry and polish with a lint-free cloth.

▪ Soap and Water
This can be used to remove oil and grime. Combine 1 part mild dishwashing liquid with 3 parts warm water in a small bowl. Dip a soft bristled toothbrush, soft cloth or cotton swab into the solution and use it to gently scrub the stone and backing. Alternatively, the earrings can be soaked in the solution for up to 30 minutes. Rinse them under warm water, dry and polish with a lint-free cloth.

▪ Soda Water
Fill an everyday glass around halfway with soda water, then drop your earrings in and leave them to soak overnight. In the morning, remove them from the water and rinse under warm water. Finish by drying and polishing them with a lint-free cloth.

▪ Window Cleaner
This method is not appropriate if the backings contain rhodium. Pour a small amount of commercial window cleaner into a bowl and soak your diamond earrings for less than a minute. In a separate bowl, combine 1 part mild dishwashing liquid with 3 parts water. Dip the jewellery in for about a minute to remove excess cleaner. Rinse them under warm water, dry and polish with a lint-free cloth.

▪ Vodka
A great solution if you have nothing else on hand. Fill a shot glass with vodka and let the earrings soak in it for a few minutes. Rinse them under warm water, dry and polish with a lint-free cloth.

We hope that one of the methods outlined above allows you to clean your diamond earrings properly, returning their shine and luster. If you are still not happy with their appearance, we recommend taking the earrings to a jeweller for a professional clean. Something a little more damaging than dirt may have found its way onto your diamonds, so this will need to be determined.
