So you have a great head of hair, but they are not exactly strong, which technically means that you have hair that only looks good, and in reality, is far from the same. And weak hair is not a good sign – it tells you that your body itself is not healthy and that your hair needs a lot more attention. Technically speaking, your hair would be considered weak:

• If the very structure of the hair is fragile
• If it breaks very easily
• If it truly difficult to style and maintain
The only way to get around weak hair is to do everything to strengthen it!

Why is hair weak?

There are various reasons for hair being weak and some of the most prominent ones include:
• Genetics
• Certain types of medications
• Certain types of medical conditions and treatments (chemotherapy, radiation)
• Treating hair with strong chemicals
• Using hot styling tools on hair as well as strong styling products
• Incorrect eating habits and certain types of deficiencies
• Incorrect methods of handling hair, such as vigorous towelling and combing

When ...
... your hair is truly healthy, it will be able to withstand most of the factors mentioned above.

What are the precautions someone with weak hair should take?

Weak hair need to be taken care of and babied, which is why you need to start making some drastic changes in your hair care routine:
• For starters, you need to stop using your fine toothed comb and invest in a comb with wide teeth. Use a brush with softer bristles, instead of your metal one. It is best that you allow your hair to dry naturally, but if you really need to comb it, use your wide toothed comb for the same.
• If you are noticing knots or snarls in your hair, use leave in conditioners or detangling sprays. Run your fingers through your hair first and only then move onto a comb or brush.
• Chemical treatments such as perming, re-bonding, permanent straightening and styling tools such as hair irons and curling tongs are known to reduce the strength of the hair,
which is why people with weak hair should keep such treatments and tools, only for special occasions.
• Even a hair dryer uses a high level of heat and that can damage hair. So, let your hair dry naturally and if you must use a dryer, use it at the lowest setting and move the dryer constantly.
• Oils are your best friends, because they not only provide necessary hydration, but also internal nourishment. Oils such as coconut, olive and jojoba are known to be great to restore the natural balance of hair. Warm the oil a little, massage into the scalp and apply liberally on the entire length of the hair. Leave the oil for a while, before washing it off with a good shampoo.
• Invest in good quality conditioners, washable as well as leave in, because these will prove to be best friends for your hair. After you have shampooed your hair, make sure you work in the conditioner, concentrating on the tips of your hair. If you are using a hair dryer, you certainly need to apply some leave in conditioner, because it will provide the necessary moisture to your hair.
• If your hair seems limp or flat, you could look for shampoos and conditioners that can provide you with better volume. However, make sure that you stick to a type that suits your hair type, be it dry or oily.
• Weak hair is more prone to split ends as well, which is why you need to pay extra attention to the ends of your hair. The best idea is to get a trim every few weeks, because this will stop the splits from travelling upwards, damaging the hair further.
• There are certain medicines that tend to contribute to weakening hair and your doctor will be able to guide you about the same. If you feel that your medication might be doing the same, you can ask for alternatives, especially natural or organic ones. In case it is a medication, a course of which you must complete, then you can be quite confident that your hair will grow back, once the course is over.
• Sudden traumatic experiences or excessive stress can also lead to weakening of hair; however, when the same is over, the body begins to recuperate and your hair too should return to its normal growth cycle. As your hair returns to normalcy, simply make sure that you offer it the proper care that it deserves.

The cause for real worry would be when your hair starts to break off from the scalp, as that would mean that you are not receiving the essential nutrients through your diet. This would point to how you need to improve your diet as well as follow corrective measures in your hair care and styling methods. Include eggs, leafy green vegetables, carrots, beets, broccoli, tomatoes and avocados in your regular diet. Fruits and nuts such as strawberries, apricots, bananas, grapes, flaxseeds and walnuts are good too.
If, even after all these precautions, you still have a problem, visit a trichologist, who would recommend treatment options like hair growth medications, lasers, PRP depending on your individual requirement.

Weak hair is not the end of the world, because there is always a way to bring them back to life!
